Mantis gives you shin splints.

Yesterday, June 12, I rode Mantis at CP, this ride I have never liked do to the fact it is painful to your lower body. But I rode it yesterday antway and I came off of it with what I believe to be shin splints. I had trouble walking the rest of the day, but CP is still awesome and I had an excellent time. Has anyone else had something similar?

If that happens, you weren't riding right. If your center of gravity isn't in line with your legs, you'll use your legs to push yourself up against the seat and away from the floor. That's not good, because your legs are fighting what is effectively several times your normal weight.

I've said it many times: The best way to ride a B&M stand-up is with the harness just above your shoulders, leaning into the harness away from the seat, with your feet all the way to the back of the floor. This aligns your weight right over your leg so you are supported by your bones, not your muscles.

I highly doubt that you got shin splints. I'm involved in track and soccer, and shin splints are basically a result of running/jumping on a hard surface often over a lengthy period of time. You usually get them by running on i.e a track in bad condition, asphalt, hard ground, or a B-ball court. Also they take time to develop, you probabbly didn't get them on a short coaster ride.
I experianced these the first 2 years of Mantis. Now, I have no problem. Either my legs got stronger or I'm riding differantly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't shin splints very small stress fractures? I highly doubt they'll form from one coaster ride. I had them for about 6 months after I started running regularly. Eventually, they healed, and I've been fine since.

I did put my feet back and lean forward, and I read that advice before I went so I could ride more comfortably, because my legs aways hurt after standups, but the pain usally goes away after a few minutes. This time was different, I still have a very slight sensation as I am typing this. They might not be shin splints, but that is what I friend called them. Anyway, something goofy happened to my shins. Maybe Markley got shin splint on a ride and now he wants to stop all rides :).

Jeff's method for riding stand-ups is perfect. Very little pain!

How do you ride a stand up coaster? i rode Mantis Twice on my two day viset at cedarpoint last summer and the first ride i just stood there and i wasent really liking the sensations of the ride after the loop it was like i couldent feel my feet and my legs fell asleep on me? then the second on it the ride op sugested i bend my knees a lil so i did then going up the lift when i leaned out harnest it clicked down one more and the seat moved up a littel. so now i was standing straight up with my back on the car and then right after the drop and into the loop it was all out pain!! (dam that bike seat!)becuase the go force was pushing down yet i was standing and had a bike seat between my legs then after like the 2nd or 3rd inversion my legs felt like they fell asleep and my the cork screw i wanted off! so how you ride?
Did you mention it to the guest relations?
Are you going to Sue? LOL Just Jokeing !
No, I would never sue CP, it is my favorite place to go in the world, and I have felt pain on Mantis before and still keep riding it. I guess I will never learn. I'll see you on the MANTIS

Do exactly what the ride tells you too. Ride standing straight up, with your feet against the back of the car. Don't sit on the bicycle seat, it isn't helpful. Try to get the harness in pretty tight, it will lock on you after the first drop and/or loop anyways. Those are my methods for an intense, but fun ride!
