Most people swim to the island but the article claims he used a boat. Likely something small like a kayak I would guess.

Under normal circumstances, you'd have a hard time getting there because there are patrol boats monitoring the boat rentals, and how they interact with the skiing area (the north half of Bay Lake) and the ferries and resort boats.

There’s a young 20 something old guy on YouTube that posts about his explorations in restricted areas. One of his videos he explains how he got in an inflatable raft with a friend to Discovery Island before dawn, to avoid anyone noticing them.
Yeah at night it wouldn't be as hard or really hard at all to get over there. I just wouldn't want to be there at night. The place is creepy even in the daylight.

That was my first thought when hearing about these trespassers on the island. There’s no way I’d ever want to try that due to the gators alone.
