From the official blog:
The Main Street Electrical Parade, Magic Kingdom Park’s long-running nighttime parade, will officially end its historic run at Walt Disney World Resort on October 9 and then head to Disneyland Resort for a limited-time encore engagement.

I'm sure this will bring all the Disney fanboys out with their never ending cries that Iger and Co hate the Orlando parks.
That's kind of a bummer. I've only been to Disney twice, once when I was 6 and again at 14, and one of the things I remember (vaguely, but still) is the parade. It's something I never considered being gone when I finally take my kids there.
I can't imagine it doesn't get replaced with something else. I read something somewhere about Paint the Night from DLR coming to MK. It's a great parade - kind of hybrid of a traditional daytime parade and a modern version of the Electrical Parade.
I never understood parades until I started going with my kid. Families eat them up. I would also be shocked if there was not a replacement for this. I admit that I have a soft spot for the slightly dated electronic music. I seem to recall that it had a break of several years... anyone else recall it that way?
Sidebar: It's much more tolerable to deal with parades since they expanded the hub and also opened up the "backstage" road that runs parallel to Main Street. Prior to this, it seemed I always left during a parade, and it was torture.

I worked at the park during the Spectromagic (is it running at any of the Disney parks now?) years and night parades are just game changers. Not only is it a great event for the viewers but if you aren't into the parade it is a great time to get on the rides.
I'm a sucker for the MSEP and I think we stopped for it on each MK trip we've taken so far this year. Now we will make the effort to get up there and see it one more time before it is gone, I'm sure. Speculation is that "Paint the Night" will move from California to Florida. I don't know much about that one.
Paint the Night is great, and if you aren't a die hard sentimentalist for MSEP, you'll love PTN. Both have their strong points but PTN is much more technologically advanced. The Mack float is very cool, and prior to the Rio Olympics Cauldron, the finale float was unique and very trippy. Steve Davison should be pissed that Rio stole his schtick.

Considering that artist Anthony Howe designed both the Paint the Night finale sculpture and the Olympic cauldron, it's no surprise they're similar.
