Magnum's 1989 record - CoasterBuzz

Does anyone know how long it held the record for the tallest coaster in the world & which coaster topped it?

I was thinking how short MF held the title for, that sucks but what can you do?

At least CP has the honour of building the first ever Hyper & Giga coasters in the world.

Although, i do know what beat MF in the height/speed record ;-)

I believe Steel Phantom was the next coaster to top the height record. And it was built one year after Magnum

I believe that this a topic of semantics. Now that i think of it i do believe (but am not positive) that The Phantom broke the drop recond in a year or two following the Magnum. But... I also believe that the Desparado out in Vegas broke the height of the Magnum shortly after the Phantom broke the drop record. Now that i think about it i do remember the park being able to claim tallest ride even if they didn't have the longest drop.

Magnum opened in 1989 as the tallest, fastest, and longest drop.

Steel Phantom opened in 1991 and took the title of longest drop and highest top speed.

Both Desperado and Pepsi Max opened in 1994. Both are taller than Magnum, but I am not sure which opened first. Pepsi Max is listed as being 4 feet taller than Desperado, though.

Height and drop records are two separate things. Steel Phantom only stood 160' off the ground. The ride's largest descent was 225', shooting off downside a steep ravine.

I believe it was Pepsi Max Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach that dethroned Magnum XL-200.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about Steel Phantom, Pepsi Max & Desperado. SP most of all, no need to explain why. ;)

Will check one of my Guiness books as they show a illustration of which topped which I think.

taipan i think you might be wrong that cedar point built the first 200" coaster. theres one in japan called moonsault scramble that was over 200" in 1983

I'm surprised that it took someone so long to mention Moonsault Scramble - let the never ending debate continue!

I don't count shuttles. It just doesn't seeem right.

Magnum was beat in drop by Steel Phantom and in height by The Big One and Desperado more or less simultaneously.

Niether the Big One nor Desperado beat the phantom in drop: Desperado tied it, while The Big One came up (down?) a few feet short.

The Big One is, I think, taller than Desperado (There does seem to be a bit of contoversy about The Big One's actual height, though. Didn't they use its height above sae level, or something, for the official stats?). Desperado got it's record by using a bit of trickery, just like Steel Phantom. Hoever, this was a little more straitforward- there's a tunnel at the bottom of ther first hill.

Incidentally, Phantom also had the honor of breaking Magnum's speed record. I don't think either The Big One or Desperado broke it, but Desperado may have tied that as well.

I'm not counting shuttles, they're in a class of their own.

The 1996 Guiness lists Desperado as the tallest & sharing longest drop with SP as well as Pepsi Max holding both titles for Europe.

One thing you can't argue about, all four were designed by Arrow! Pity their Golden Age of Hypers had to come to an end. They would've designed a Giga by now.

Forget how short Millenium Force held the record... what about Goliath? Now that was short.

actually, Goliath held it longer than MF. It opened in January, I believe, and lasted until May. MF opened in May and held it until, I think, late July.

That tends to be the accepted argument in favor of Magnum. On Moonsault, not all of the train ever reaches that 200 foot mark. On Magnum, everyone goes 200 feet up.

Goliath had it from early February to early May. Then Millennium Force took it from May to early August, and that was when Steel Dragon 2000 was unveiled at Nagashima Spaland.

The train reaches a greater height on Magnum, but there is a longer drop on Moonsault Scramble. Magnum's drop isn't even 200ft.
