Magnum = First Hypercoaster?

When Magnum XL-200 opened in 1989, was Magnum the first hypercoaster in the world?

Cedar Point, doesn't get any better then that:)
Yes
I thought there was another coaster in the world that ws over 200 feet high before Magnum? Wasn't it the Moonsault Scramble in Japan?

Moonsault Scramble isn't a hyper. A hyper has no loops...just hills. I hate when people refer to coasters that loop that are taller than 200 ft as Hypers. A hyper is made for airtime...not loops.

When you get down to it there really is no correct definition specified for a hyper coaster. Some people refer to it as the total hight being over 200 feet; with a drop of over 200 feet; with loops or without.

I refer to a hyper as a coaster over 200 feet tall with no loops: so really I don't know why I responded to this with the Moonsault Scramble. I must not have been thinking. Sorry for any resulting confusion!

So why did most people refer to the Steel Phantom as a Hypercoaster. I see it like this. A coaster over 200 feet with NO loops is what I consider a traditional hyper coaster. Anything else I just refer to a hyper coaster with loops. I want to ask a question. Would you consider SOB a hyper coaster if it didn't have the loop? It would be traditional with no loops, but would it still be traditional even though it's not still? Well I guess that's two questions. But it really depends on the person what a Hyper is or not.
man lbwmobster, just readings ur reply confused the heck out of me. the way i see a hyper coaster to be is a continous-circuit coaster thats has a drop of 200 feet. so to me moonsault scramble is not a hyper coaster it isnt a continous-circuit. loops on a hyper r no biggy. for acers the true definition i believe for a hyper is any coaster exceeds 200 feet. but who knows, its just the way you look at it.

This is one of those neverending debates. Everyone has their own opinion on what is and isn't a hypercoaster, and since there's no specific definition, the argument will go on together.

But to answer your question, yes, Magnum was the first hypercoaster. Why? The term was first coined to describe Magnum -- not Moonsault Scramble.

The end.
