Love Thread: Big Woodies

Beast and SOB p0wn! Nuff said. They're both great rides.

The Millenium Force ride Ops: Squishing you where it counts since 2000.
Track Record: 62 coasters at 17 parks.

I LOVE Teaxas Giant also How abot Texas Cyclone Its not big but thanks to the new trains its returning to its old glory
In this case, I think it has been proven over and over again that bigger isn't necessarily better. Dania Beach Hurricane is still one of the best wood coasters I have ever ridden. It is a short ride but I will put it right up near the Beast for pure fun (without the pain).
Maybe I'm biased since I live near MI Adventure, but I love Shivering Timbers. It's one of my favorite coasters, period.

I agree with you 100% on the ptc's. Were you there on media day when they had the eagle trains on it? I heard that it ran great with those trains.

Mehh... while I wasn't there on media day, I seriously wonder if it really was any better with Eagle's trains. The day I was there, I hated Eagle... due to the trains. Never has my back (my relatively young, otherwise problem free back, mind you) hurt so much in my life. My memory of Eagle is really only a blur of pain... SFStL is the only place that has ever convinced me that Gerstlauers can top PTCs. Does anyone have pics of Boss with the alternate trains? That'd be cool to see. Anywho... I still say throw some Cornball-esque buzz bars on Boss and it'd be on everyone's Top 10 no question.

I'll agree with you that the eagle trains aren't great but they are more for a twister layout than the gerstlauers. I think it should be top ten anyway but hey.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to buy a few new trains? I wouldn't see it being that expensive.

This isn't really a big woodie but it is one of the wildest. I think Tremors is the best woodie out there. Also Timber Terror has the best airtime on woodie, i think. I would choose Tremors/Timber Terror over Raven/Legend any day!

I've been hearing great things about the Silverwoodies...definitely looking forward to CAC...:)

Probably the two best rides I've had on "large" woodies would be Ghostrider and Boss...

I'm sure if PKI wanted to sink *another* ungodly sum into Sonny it could become "bearable"...;)

I personally love Texas Giant, and Timberwolf. Oddly, both are also Summers and Dinn... hmm...

Also, Megazeph was awesome, and could have been even better with PTCs.

I will have to go with Beast #1 and Giant #2 on my list. I haven't ridden Giant since about '92 and I always give the nod to terrain coasters anyway. I love the design of the first drop on Giant; the way it releases from the chain first before it hits the steep part of the drop. By the way, I actually rode Screamin' Eagle in 1977. I was 11 yrs. old and was not a coaster fan prior to that. Was that the opening year for it? Great ride.

Well, with these *woodies* size DOES NOT matter. It's the quality of the *ride*. :-)

Lightning Racer, Legend, Raven, Beast, Screachin Eagle, Cornball Express.......(sigh). All come in different sizes and shapes with different pleasing elements. But as long as they can do the job.........:-)

A ride on the Mean Streak in the rain or right after the rain is great because the trims hardly slow the trains down. If they just took those trims off it would easily be one of the top "big woodies"
Mean Streak is a good one, although it dose not scare you to death it is a pretty good and very fun ride. I don't know why that many people hate it so much

Tina, I absolutely *love* all of the rides you mentioned there....well, 'cept for the first half of Beast....but the ending remains THE helix which all other helices aspire to be...

Big wood CAN be as good as those...normally, in the interests of maintenance, they end up *castrated* though...:(

I like to think of The Beast as the best example of a runaway mine train....but on steroids!!

Wood - anything else is an imitation

Shivering Timbers is the most magnifcent big woodie I've ever experienced.

Where can I pick up one of these "Shivering Timbers"? It sounds good. ;)

If we're saying that a "big" woodie is anything over 100 feet, then I must say that GhostRider is my favorite. No other coaster that I have been on has had such powerful forces. The laterals on this thing are phenominally forceful to the point where I had to hold on. The laterals, combined with the airtime and all that wood (mmmmmm... wood... *drooling sounds*) make it my favorite big wood rolli coastie.

l. Shivering Timbers medium sized? It's 5383 feet long, with a 2:30 ride time, 122 ft. height, and averages 57 mph in the am getting faster later. Surely that qualifies it as Big.

2. Having been beaten up by the best of 'em, I think The Beast still reigns supreme, trims or age or anything notwithstanding. I would rank Mean Streak and Shivering Timbers as second and third.

3. I'm not sure Boulder Dash qualifies as Big. It's long and a great run through the woods, but not as high or fast. If it's Big, I consider it right up there with Beast, MS and ST.

C'mon, give some lovin' to the Eagle twins. Screamin' and American Eagle are kick a$$.

Plus the Boss, Legend (if it's a "big woodie", I don't know if it falls into that category), and Colossus.

And the obvious PKI Father/Son duo, Beast and Son of Beast.

I love the American Eagle. Don't ask me why- maybe it's the big 150' drop near vertical, that I think is better than Raging Bulls (except in the back on Bull). Maybe the wild air on the red side. Maybe just because. I don't know. I've loved the American Eagle since day 1- it's just a fun ol' ride that usually has a short wait..
