LoCoSuMo: now with theming! (5/16)

Associated parks:
None

Warning, if you're the type who likes to be totally surprised...there are spoilers ahead.

Made my third trip (already!) of the season IB Friday night with a friend to celebrate her college graduation. Friday was the first night the park was open "for real"...meaning until 11, band at the lounge, fountains running, etc. It was also really, really empty. Picked up POP ride passes (still buy one, get one free through 5/22...go!) and headed in to show my friend around...I love taking people to IB for the first time.

Saw LoCoSuMo's (still only one train...not that it needed more) train sitting in the station with two kids on it...so we hopped in...the operators said they can't run the train unless there are four people in it...so we teased the kids and told them we weren't just doing them a favor by riding with them and that they owed us each a dollar. They sort of laughed. I know I'm getting old when I start making lame jokes like my mom would make with kids. Sigh. Anyway...about the theming/cleaning up.

As it's already been mentioned, there are now real queue lines ;) for LoCoSuMo; there are also two nice signs for the ride, one on the station house, and one at the top of the lift.

Most of Superstition Mountain's (as much as I remember anyway) original theming has been returned to the ride. There are two miners, a skeleton (but with eyeballs...hmm), a couple of beavers, a bear, a wolf, the tunnel...which was spinning but it's really dark and hard to see...and spoiler....the train complete with noise! w00t! with zeros.

If you've ridden before, you know the train stops mid-course inside the mountain and pauses for no apparent reason. As it turns out...the miner sitting above where you've stopped now looks at you and says something to the effect of "what are you doing here? we're gonna blast!" then he blasts...and the train drops. Nice.

We rode facing forward, and there was no one when we got back to the station, so the 2 pairs switched seats, and we rode backwards. Backwards definitely provides the more thrilling ride, but face forwards to get the most "bang" out of the scenery.

And the mountain looks pretty good...it's cleaned up nicely. The return of the theming is great and it's nice to see the tradition of this ride preserved. Does anyone remember a blast of cold air in the tunnels back before it was LoCo? And I think there used to be more stalagmites. I just like that word.

The rest of the beach rocked as usual. Ate a lot of bugs being blasted on the Double Shot at night. Yum. Got on the Flying Bobs with a bunch of high schoolers who convinced the ride op to run us backwards (long)/backwards(short)/forwards (long long long)/backwards (long). Ugh. Everyone was stumbling around like a wino when that was over, but that's part of the charm of IB. ;)

Also had the privilege of being the first patrons of the year at the Rooftop Lounge...and enjoyed a private concert with a trio of old guys rockin' out to all the best of the 70s. They were pretty cool and offered to buy us drinks...but we'd already had one each and had to get back on the road for the 2 hour trip home, so we passed, but it would've been fun. Next time... :)

I liked the theming during my first, last and only ride better. I think it went something like, "Hey, let's wave to the construction workers!"
I stoped in on 5/18 while returning home from CBuzzCon. A very intense ride and I agree about riding it backwards. Hurricane and Cornball were a pleasent suprise awell. I thought Den of the Lost Thieves was a great revamp of the older style dark ride. Tig'rr was running but no Galaxi.

dawnmarie,

The blasts of cold air were from the air conditioners which were removed when the old mounntain was gutted. Many stalagmites were also removed due to the train clearances.

Actually, stalactites were removed due to train clearances, not stalagmites...

What an entire IB TR and no mention of *our baby* Dawn? ;)

God bless Intamin, Company that I love. Stand beside her, and ride her, from the opening to the closing of the day.

Thanks for clearing that up, George. I thought they were called something else but couldn't remember. :)

Brent, how many times can I say our baby is beautiful before people just get tired of hearing about her...err...him. ;)

And thanks IBDave...I was wondering if I had just made it up in my memory.

Great TR Dawn! It really makes me excited to finally hit IB on the 1st of June after SRM... w00t w00t! Do they have skeeball there? ;)

LoCoSuMo sounds like a great ride. I didn't know there was forward and backward seating though. That sounds pretty interesting.

Stalactites is just plain sexier sounding the stalagmites, regardless of where they originate...;)

Remember, StalacTITES hold TITE to the ceiling and you MITE trip over a stalagMITE on the floor.

I MITE have to shoot myself after all this! Actually, I might have to hit Indy Beach this yeah. Thanks for the theming update! I am sure I remember the cold air too. I like how the props fit with the ride's pacing. Hmmm...SFKK or IB after SRM? Either way here's a big w00t for the upcoming season....

After hitting both SFKK and IB this weekend, I'd definitely pick the Beach for CornBall and LoCoSuMo!

Later,
