I just bought a new cordless home phone. I went to Best Buy first, because I expected them to have the best selection. They didn't. They didn't have anything with the features that I wanted.
As I left, the girl guarding the entrance and exit asked me if I found everything okay. I told her that the shelves in the phone department were empty. Her response was crazy. She said, "That's becasue everyone is getting rid of their land lines and getting cell phones". I said, "Not me", and went to Walmart. My new phone is awesome, by the way.
I live in rural West Virginia. I'm lucky to get a signal.

We went from traditional landline to VOIP in 2005. Last summer, I finally ditched that and transferred the home number to a cell that sits on my desk as the 'house phone' (and gets almost no use, since everyone has their own phone) for 1/3rd the price that the VOIP cost.
I haven't looked back and I regret not doing it sooner.
And I echo Josh on the smartphone. It's amazing how quickly you learn to take having all those tools always available for granted.
When I move back to a civilized part of the country, I will probably ditch my land line as well then. lol
