The difference is in the type of motor. LIMs are linear induction motors, in which a moving magnetic field induces a current in a non-magnetic conductive reaction plate; a magnetic field forms around that reaction plate to propel it along the moving field.
Linear synchronous motors use fixed-field magnets on the vehicle which are pulled and pushed along by electromagnets along the track. LSMs are more powerful than LIMs and more efficient, and can operate with a larger gap between coil and reaction surface, but the LSM also requires more precise timing for it to function.
Does that work better for you? I need to put the simplified version on my website as well... :)
