LIM's versus LSM's

PKI's was *finished* first and *opened* first, Jeff. So... blleeeeh :-p

If you're going to be an ass and correct an ass, be more correct than the corrected ass.

And I'm going to be an ass and say "you're wrong, Rideman" even though I'm pretty confident he's right. I just have always wanted to say that. ;)

Intamin...uses them to launch trains at over 100 mph...Duh!

Since we're correcting each other here... what Intamin coasters use LIMs to go that fast, BigJim?

Errr...oops. ;)

Sorry, was trying to make the point of speed differences and totally forgot what I was saying at the end there...forgive me?

Haha no I'm not giving Patrick the finger

no,,,PKI's tested first, based on my info Hmmmmm.

"If you are going to be an ass, be a correct ass"

This came from Premier Rides:

At 5:33 p.m. on Thursday April 11, 1996 Don West, rides manager of Paramount's Kings Dominion successfully performed the FIRST launch of a Linear Induction Motor Catapult Coaster. The test proved that the Coaster called OUTER LIMITS FLIGHT OF FEAR and built by PREMIER RIDES could accelerate a train from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds using only a magnetic wave. The technology, up to now considered for use for launching carrier based aircraft and for the Star Wars Missile Defense Program, is brand new to the industry and had never before been tested. The success of the test most likely means the ride will open up ahead of its original schedule of Memorial Day Weekend.

-------

It didn't make that Memorial Weekend opening but it did open a few weeks after that--June 17 according to the information I have.

In looking back through previous posts I found that both parks had media/preview days scheduled for June 17 and both parks opened the coaster to the public on June 18. I did see reports of employees riding PKI's as early as June 14, but no early reports from PKD, however that doesn't mean there weren't any early riders. Where are you getting your information that PKI opened theirs first?

I could swear that Rock n Rollercoaster is a cable/sled system, not LSM or LIM. I've seen the sled return from the launch tunnel when I'm there. But...perhaps its the catch car that is accelerated by LIM or LSM...I'm so confused!!!

"And we are now passing under Millennium Force, which, with the arrival of Top Thrill Dragster, is now...just blue."
You are correct...the train is accelerated via a sled that attaches to the rear of the train. The sled itself is powered by LSM's.

Jeff-

My info comes from Jeff Siebert on one of the PKI tours. I think it was at Beastbuzz last season where he told us about the construction methods used on the FoF twins- PKI's building came first, then ride while PKD's was ride, then building. PKI's was completed first and opened earlier than expected because most of the work was shielded from the winter weather.

Kev-

It's easy to be deceived by that sled thing. That combined with the fact that some of the merchandise in the gift shop at the ride's exit says "gravity launch system" (for who knows what reason) made me wonder for quite some time about what the hell actually made the ride go.
