launch versus hill :)

hey everyone, ive recently began to wonder at the onset of LIM and impulse coasters around the US. i live right near PKD, and they;re last 3 new coasters have been launch rides...flight of fear, volcano, and hypersonic xlc....but you know, i still love a good heart pounding drop..so give me some of your opinions...do you guys dig the new launch technology, or is the clickety clack still the way to go?? :)

ROLLERCOASTERS....BETTER THAN OXYGEN BABY!!!!!!
I like the new launching technology.
Why not a launch to get up the first hill, then everything else is like a conventional coaster. All the same thrills of a ride without half the ride being 5 miles per hour.

I think I prefer the anticipation and buildup of a conventional lift - one of the best being Magnum XL-200, heading toward the lake. It gives you the opportunity to take a breath and appreciate the view - you won't have time after you're at the top! Launches are certainly fun, and I have nothing against them, but well, if I have to pick, give me a good ole clickety clack.

Are you talking about something like hypersonic XLC or having the train slow down to a near stop then go through out a regular layout just like it had just gone up a chain lift?

As coasters grow taller, I reckon this will be the cheapest & easiest way of making them a reality. Compare a 500ft lift hill versus the launch & vertical hill of a TA2K. Then again there is the Intamin 45 degree cable lift hill.

I would love this, a conventional coaster without a slow lift. Think about it, two thrills in one, a launched vertical hill & a conventional coaster.

Not including the above, I like both. IMO, the launch on the Hulk ruined it as it rushed an otherwise short ride. I found it's neighbour, Kumba, to be way better.

Well, when parks start trying to save on space, they'll start using the LIM and impulse coasters more. I like the big drops, but when we start getting as high as we do, I don't want to be on a lift for two minutes waiting to get to the top. Maybe if they started using the elevator lift like on MF more often.

I really prefer a chain-lift hill it lets me anticipate what will be coming next in the ride.
Launched hills provide exitemen but the ride becomes shorter and most of them slow down after it launches. That is not good.
I prefer Intamin's Elevator Lift system! That thing is pure genius! Who needs launches to go higher? The Elevator Lift can go VERY high and it is VERY fast! It amazed me as to how quickly I went to the top of MF's lift!

I like the conventional lift, but not if it takes as long as Phantom's Revenge!
the launch didn't ruin the hulk coaster, it had to do the launch cause of the zero roll on the top of the hill.

They would have to design the rest of the ride to compete with the beginning.

CrystalKat: Clickety-Clack 4 life! Nothing matches going up a lift for a hyper, with the anticipation building, on the other hand, the anticipation for the launch on V2 also causes the same "fear" that the lift hill causes, its a matter of opinion, but i do indeed prefer the traditional lift hill.

I agree.

But it would be nice to accelerate somewhere in the middle of the ride.

That would improve on the pacing. I think the ride should get better and better the closer it gets to the end.
