Last Gasp: Say goodbye to The Great Gasp at SFOG

Gasp sucks, lets face it. Screw history: bring on the new. Bigger and better is where we're going, and if something slower and smaller gets run over in its path... that's just too bad.

PS. Greased Lightnin' is, in my opinion, running better than Viper ever did. Viper launched too quickly, and there was zero airtime on the way back through the loop. You float through the whole thing on Greased. I miss my Viper, so I often go visit it in Kentucky.

Welcome back, red train, how was your ride?!
Maybe you'll understand in 10 years when your favorite coaster gets torn down for something 'newer and better'...

{Perhaps youu just dont knoew what it will belike to approach the park and not see if for the first tikme in your lieftime. I guess you dont wsee it as an icon of the park do you?
I've been to SFoG twice in my life (1994 and 2004) and I'm sad to see Gasp go. It really was a unique ride and I quite enjoyed it.

Oh, don't you worry. I've been going to the park since before I can remember, and I go more than 5 times per year (usually like 10), and yes, the Gasp is the first thing that you usually see when the trees clear away and you're on I-20. Trust me, I know what it looks like.

But maybe people haven't realized: since 2001, Acrophobia has been in that view, too. And it's bright purple and yellow; stands out much more than Gasp ever did. Maybe the ride was a park icon, sure, but did any of you ever ride it and enjoy it? I did not. The thing is awful with slow capacity and uninspired workers (not that the rest of the rides have inspired workers, but still). Maybe I'm the only one that's happy to see it (and Looping Starship) go, but that doesn't make me any less happy.

So, because you go to the park all the time we shouldn't be sad to see a neat ride go?

I don't follow.

I rode it many times on my first visit and loved it. I rode it again on my more recent visit and loved it again. Just because you don't like the ride doesn't mean there aren't people out there that do.

I don't think anyone is pissing and moaning about it going because, hey, it's old, it's hard to find parts for, and it's not the world's highest capacity ride. But for you to come along and say "too bad, it sucks, I don't like it so you shouldn't either, blah blah blah" is just rude.

I still haven't ridden one. The Jr. Ripoff at DCA had too long a line when I was there. One day, maybe.

All I was saying is: I won't miss it. That's my opinion. Is that a problem?

Welcome back, red train, how was your ride?!
Then why didn't you just say that instead of trying to convince us all that it sucks?

Because I just found it hard to believe people would pick this ride over a new hyper.

No one "picked" this ride over a new hyper. The ride is an icon of the park and most everyone who has ever been remembers it that way. I for one am sad to see it go, but if the rumored replacement for it does happen, at least it'll be worthy of that spot.

Happiness is like peeing your pants. Everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth. Trip pics are here: http://www.pbase.com/jhbd99.
I don't think anyone in the thread is saying "OMG, it HAS to stay." There comes a time when it's obviously time for a ride to go. This just happens to be Gasp's time for more than one reason.

Besides, it's not like a set of flyers that can just be moved across the park if they really need room for a lawn. (-grumbles-)

Did people have this reaction when the Airplanes were removed for Acrophobia? No.

Welcome back, red train, how was your ride?!
I wouldnt exactly call the Air Racers an icon of the park...

I actually liked them more than the Gasp, and I can say that I was fairly disappointed that it left, since I don't care for drop towers and on top of that, the capacity stinks. However, with it, like the Gasp, I knew removal was only a matter of time.

OMG, you're right. Great Gasp sucks. I can't believe they ever built it in the first place! Thanks for opening my eyes, SFoGSwim. I would have never realized it had you not given us such convincing reasons!
I'd take those cool Air Racers over Acraphobia anyday. They had such a nice breeze.

Eh. Never really rode this ride. It'll change the view of the park but I'd rather have any kind of coaster.

Chattanooga needs a ITG2 Machine!
I thought I would point out a nice video tribute to the Great Gasp that was on WXIA out of Atlanta today as part of the evening news cast:

Hmmm... they said something along the lines of this: "you could be the last the ride the Great Gasp. And you could be among the first to ride 'Starship.' What is Starship? We don't know, they won't tell us."

Starship?!
