Largest freefall towers announced!

Marineland announced that they will add a 450 foot S&S tower. Here's the link:

Yeah my homepark is in Albany, NY but I always have 12 hours to go to The Point!

From what I understand, the towers are not 450 feet. Instead, the ride is built on top of a hill, so from the base of the hill to the top of the ride, it is 450 feet.

"Dragon Mountain® roller coaster - ride the world's largest steel roller coaster, Dragon Mountain® found only at Marineland®. Spread over 30 acres of land, it is the world's largest non-stop roller coaster. Dragon Mountain also features more travel through tunnels - 1,163 feet - than any other coaster in the world"

And i'm supposed to believe this company?

Well that little blurb about Dragon Mountain was correct when it was built. And, in terms of the space it takes up, could still be true, I'm not sure.

As for the tower, it is a 300 foot double shot tower (if I'm not mistaken), with three legs. It is being built on a 150 foot hill, making the total height 450 feet.

I think the ride itself is built on a 150ft hill, so the towers themselves are 300 ft. For Dragon Mt,by largest they must mean most land covered, in that case 30 acres is alot.

If the things were that big, can you imagine how much they'd suck? Cedar Point's Power Tower was the first S&S tower I had been on, and I thought it was cool, but after getting on the shorter towers at other places it was clear that bigger is not better in this case. Can't wait to get on Holiday World's Liberty Launch!

I've done both small (Mali-boomer, Turbo Drop, The Big Shot) and tall (Power Tower, Supreme Scream) S&S towers, and the big ones are in no doubt in my mind much more terrifying, and exhilerating.
I gotta agree with Jeff on this one. The most intense S&S tower I found to be in Doctor Doom's fearfall. The air at the top of the launch is insane. Also I gotta give credit to SFNE for theirs, while tall, you get both versions in one, space shot and turbo drop. I think other parks run this same version but I havent found one yet.

S:ToP at Six Flags over Texas is a combo ride.

The drop tower at Six Flags Mexico is also a combo ride.
Actually, I'd rather the ride be an observation tower. Can you imagine the view of the falls?

Hopefully the side(s) facing the falls will be the drop side, not the shot side... for at least a temporary view.

Valleyfair! in Shakoppee, MN is also a combo ride, and so far my favorite of the S&S variations. Also, I would like to say that a Power Tower ride either shooting up or down would give a great view of the park, a much funner and quicker version then a slow moving and much less exhilerating observation tower

Hey, hey now.....watch that! A tall tower that hasn't been CFed down can be pretty good. I caught VF's Shot on an extremely lucky day in the first season near the low end of its operating temps and.....let's just say I didn't leave the tower until closing. They actually can whup some serious tail if let loose.

(who hasn't done a first-gen shot, but knows Dr. Doom and HW had nothing on this lucky day)

The CPlaya 100--6 days, 9 parks, 47 coasters, 2037 miles and a winner.....LoCoSuMo.

WT180 VF's is not a combo ride but 2 turbo shots & 1 space shot. BUT I think they should completely revamp all 3 towers into a combo shot ride.
If they say that its 450 feet because its on a hill, then the coasters at SFEG are 5,000 feet high.

Sure, the tall towers CAN be *juiced up* to give some negative-g at the top, but they're not *typically* run that way in my experience. I don't think it's a CF thing per se, I think it's that you just run out of steam (well, in a manner of speaking) before you reach the top of the tower...

I'll take IB's, WA's, and *now*, HW's over most of the taller towers....Dr. Doom is actually one of the mid-size towers that gives decent airtime, but those M-80 sized launchers, they're a real BLAST!

The best tower I've been on is the one at the Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville, I'm not sure but I think it is one of the first-gen models. Its pop of air at the top was so strong I would get light headed each time I rode it. Dr. Doom's was close, but not quite as intense. The Stratosfear tower at Visionland was just plain weak.

Ive enjoyed SFNE's the most. Coming in second, and this may sound funny, but last year there was a portable drop tower at the Altamont Fairgrounds. It was only 120ft or so...maybe alittle bigger. It was great. You got shot up, stayed up top for a few seconds, dropped, then shot up and dropped again.
