Posted | Contributed by Jeff

One of the customized Land Rovers on Busch Gardens Tampa's new Rhino Rally rolled over, tossing some of the passengers. Two people suffered minor injuries.

When a big SUV tips over, that has nothing to do with rides or the regulation of rides. It's a car, and cars aren't nearly as safe as amusement rides.

Sorry Jeff, but I totally disagree with you. Regardless of whether or not it is a car, the fact is they are using it as part of an amusement park ride. As such, they should hold it to the same safety standards as a regular ride.

As far as I am concerned, I agree Congress needs to get involved in regulating amusement park rides. There have been way too many mishaps this year alone. They say the ride was inspected and proclaimed to be safe. Obviously it wasn't. So something needs to be done. Somehow, I can see a lawsuit coming out of this.
now they need to add that tp the ride to make it more thrilling

Cedar Point, doesn't get any better then that:)
Getting on OHSA approved soap box

I am getting tired of everyone wanting Congress to play Mommy, just what we need, a FRA-Federal Rides Administration, with all its Bureaucracy. We already have state regulations which just need to be enforced.
Just where in the Constitution is this a duty of Congress??

Slips off OHSA approved soap box. Better make a new regulation!

Yeah it blows. They spent 3 years building it, and look at what they get. 2nd half of the ride is always broken, and now a tipped over Rover.

I rode it opening day. There are many places it could have flipped. Going over the 1st wooden bridge the vehicle seemed to lean. At the fork in the road leading back to the station (bypassing the ride part) it leaned alot.

Funny, they have those artificial horizon guages on the dash board like they do on airplanes with a warning light. Looks like they didn't help.

I'm so bummed. Parks are building simulators, adventure rides, and complicated stuff that isn't working.

Give us a freaking Intamin Giga Coaster and make us happy.

I agree, robvia. Give us the real daggone thing - not the stupid sims.

Just where in the Constitution does it state that it is the duty of Congress to make car manufacturers install seat belts? It doesn't. There is nothing in the Constitution that states that either, but Congress does it anyway. Why? For our own safety, that's why.
The commerce clause perhaps? Your car does not shut it self off at the state line. But, I didn't mean to turn this into a political thread. I am just getting a little sick of Congress always overreacting to everything. Sort of like when they use the purse strings to force states to pass laws such as the old 55 and now .08 or the one telling me how much water my toilet can use per flush etc. I guess I am just a States rights conservative/libertarian.

And yes, I think that .08 is a good idea. I just don't agree with how it is achieved. And with a private well and septic system who cares how much water I use, it all recycles itself anyway. O wait it is all for my OWN safety, I forgot.

Sorry I guess I listen to Rush to much as I drive with my federally mandated seatbelt(which I would use without a law)to visit my STATE inspected favorite Roller Coaster

I'm starting to agree with Ed Markey. Something must be done to tame these rides, they're getting too out of control and I'm worried about the safety of the young people. We really do need a bill forcing parks to built tamer, less complicated rides. ;)

And how will anything that Markey and his supporters propose change the number of "incidents?" There is nothing they can possibly do that would supercede what the state agencies do (who I might add are very well qualified). I've yet to hear even one thing that anyone has proposed that would have any effect on preventative safety of rides.

And what mishaps caused serious injury this year? The Goliath aneurysm was a pre-existing condition that had nothing to do with the ride (something would have killed the woman eventually). The Boulder Dash accident was an OSHA problem that had nothing to do with the safety of riders. Rollbacks happen and aren't unsafe in any way, just inconvenient.

At the risk of sounding like a Republican, the last thing we need is the feds meddling in yet another thing they don't understand.

Well, as usual the people that got hurt are suing and the Orlando press blew the event TREMENDOUSLY out of proportion. TOGO_Fan

You know what? I just typed a long response to this post, and wasn't even half way through when I decided to delete it all. Because I don't want this turning into a flame war, which is exactly where it is headed.

My opinion is my opinion, you guys. No matter how much you disagree with it.
I had a long day at work yesterday and really want this to get back to Coasters, sorry about my rant. I dont usually do that and at times have even taken extreem liberal views, I guess I am just agreeing with Jeff and dont see how new regulation would help.

Now for the serious question, Which park should I visit this weekend???

Hey, you can have any opinion you want, but when it comes to my tax dollars, it better be a good argument or I'm not having it. The spending Markey proposes in particular demonstrates no value over existing checks in place by the state agencies.

How many amusement rides cuased injuries on the same day Rhino Rally tipped over? One. (and that one was Rhino Rally) How many automobile accidents happened on that same day? Too damn many to count.

Where is the REAL safety issue? Hmmmmm... I wonder?
