Knoebels Phoenix or Great Escape Comet

While responding to a recent post regarding out-and-back vs. twister woodies, I began to wonder whether people preferred the Phoenix or Great Escape Comet. Both are similar Herb Schmeck designs, they have similar layouts and have some similar features such as a double dip and long stretches of speed hills. They were even built around the same time, and have been relocated from their original homes.

It has been awhile since I have been to The Great Escape to ride the Comet, so its tough for me to compare the two. I ride the Phoenix every year and it remains my all-time fav, but perhaps other enthusiasts feel differently?
I haven't hit the Comet since '99 and I rode the Phoenix last year for the first time. Honestly, as much as they are both awesome and they are very similar, I prefer the Comet. I thought the air on the Comet was a bit more intense and also the Comet has, I believe, two spots with some awesome lateral G's. The Comet is also a nicer looking coaster with the white steel structure in my opinion.

I havn't ridden the Pheonix, but the comet is awesome! I've been to GR about 6 times, and the longest I waited for the ride was 5 minutes!
I finally rode the GE Comet for the first time last season. The Phoenix I've been riding since 85'. The Phoenix 1948 was built a year before the GE Comet 1949. They are very similar in layouts although the Phoenix is a double figure eight and the Comet is has all left hand turns.

I prefer the Phoenix over the Comet. They both deliver great rides but I think the Phoenix beats the Comet in the air over the bunny hops. But then I think the Comet is a bit quicker in the turns. (Although after opening day at Knoebels this year I'm not sure) I also think the Phoenix has a better run out to the lift with the long dark tunnel. The Comet lacks a tunnel and long run out.

I think both are capable of top 10 lists but the Phoenix is the masterpiece of the two IMO. :)

The Comet is probably one of the best woodies in the Six Flags chain.

Hello, My name is Dan and I'm a coasterholic.
Rob, I know this is 6 days after your post, but I just decided today that I will be riding Comet this year for the first time. June 4 I will ride it, week of June 25 I will be at Knoebels, and then I plan to ride Comet again mid-July. Being familiar already with Phoenix, I am looking forward to great rides on both. I will try to remember to post my opinions of one vs the other (although this post will most likely be closed by June 5). Also, I already "know" that I will love Comet and wish it and Phoenix were closer to home.

Mother, did it need to be so high?
I rode the Comet when it was still at Crystal Beach, and I have ridden The Phoenix. I would have to give the Phoenix a slight edge, but not by much.
MABrider, I would love to hear your opinions once you get back!
