George Tilyou, Steeplechase Park..."To inquiring Friends: There was a lot of trouble yesterday that I have not had to-day, and there is lots of troubles to-day that I did not have yesterday."
Oops. And I mean a big OOPS. I was thinking that was a quite from the owners of Coney Island when it was flooded. I forgot it was Tilyou after Steeplechase burned :)
See? People aren't as dumb as you thought. Next time, look in a mirror.
Aside from water in my basement I was lucky. I wasn't around in '72, but my parents keep reminding my of the striking similarities with this flood. On a side note, the Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals truck show is supposed to be taking place next weekend July 7-9. Lets hope the event still takes place for it is a big money maker (in a time of need) for the town of Bloomsburg!
On WNEP's site they say...
"In Northumberland County Knoebels Amusement Park near Elysburg closed Wednesday. Much of the park is flooded. It may be closed at least two weeks. Fire departments were sent to the pool house at Knoebel's Amusement Resort, but firefighters had problems reaching the building due to high water. Chemicals, including chlorine are involved in that fire. The alarm came in a little after 2 a.m."

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been effected by this devastating flood!
Since hurricane Ivan 2 years ago and now this storm, I'm seriously considering moving closer to Cedar Point! ;)
With all of the pride people take in Knoebels, I don't find it hard to believe they'll have it open for this weekend, especially being the 4th of July weekend.
If I didn't work I'd volunteer to help them clean up.
what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Well best wishes to knoebels. and Bushkill...
My $2.49 rain gauge from Lowe's measured 17.5 freaking inches of rain from 9 AM Sunday to 6 AM Wednesday. Just amazing.
Knowing Knoebels, within a few days there will be signs up showing the water levels from the '06 Flood-- if they're not up already. Hoping they're able to clean up and open things again soon.
Amazing if they had no flooding at HP though. Supposedly Swatara Creek (the one you cross just above the park along Route 39 or 743) was supposed to crest higher than it did during Ivan. One thing that may have helped Hershey is that the creeks have been relatively low. IIRC, they are somewhat able to control flow along Spring Creek (the one that flows through the park). So if they were able to release a lot of water beforehand, they had a lot more capacity to hold the water that did flow in.
THe water levels look pretty high at Knoebels. I know Dick and co will work hard to get the park back in shape, but man that has to suck. Wonder how much flood insurance he has.

If I were the park, I might reconsider the location and relocate to somewhere that doesn't have the flooding possibilites that Knoebels does. Before you say it can't be done, consider that the majority of Knoebel's Rides are portable, and that the land is flat. They might lose some features of the park such as the chairlift ride and the heavy tree cover, but from getting a little bit lost last year, there is a lot of land near the park.
I've heard from a couple people inside the insurance industry that "no new home-owners' policies" would be issues for FL because, well, we have our own water issues (to wit, hurricanes). I'd imagine that KG doesn't have alot of options regarding flood insurance either, so IF they can still get it, they are PAYING for it....
Besides, it's not like this happens THAT often. And Knoebels seems to be pretty organized when it does happen. I guess they figure floods are merely the cost of doing business.
Weird question but is there any way they could somehow "control" the creeks so they don't overflow so badly? I don't know really if it's possible, but something not to far right up stream to divert some of the flood water away from the park itself or around it? *** Edited 6/30/2006 7:24:12 PM UTC by P18***
