Knoebels Flooded

I saw those photos and it's heartbreaking but I am sure Knoebels, as well as Bushkill or any other park in PA will prevail. They are probably used to floods like we are here in WV. It's a pain in the arse but we deal with it. :)

George Tilyou, Steeplechase Park...

"To inquiring Friends: There was a lot of trouble yesterday that I have not had to-day, and there is lots of troubles to-day that I did not have yesterday."

Oops. And I mean a big OOPS. I was thinking that was a quite from the owners of Coney Island when it was flooded. I forgot it was Tilyou after Steeplechase burned :)

Whcih could be a big reason why nobody on RRC picked up on your joke ;)

See? People aren't as dumb as you thought. Next time, look in a mirror.

Ooooh. Burn. Somebody get the ointment!
WNEP, our local news (I'm from Bloomsburg) had aerial shots of KG on the news last night, but I can't find them anywhere on the web.

Aside from water in my basement I was lucky. I wasn't around in '72, but my parents keep reminding my of the striking similarities with this flood. On a side note, the Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals truck show is supposed to be taking place next weekend July 7-9. Lets hope the event still takes place for it is a big money maker (in a time of need) for the town of Bloomsburg!

On WNEP's site they say...

"In Northumberland County Knoebels Amusement Park near Elysburg closed Wednesday. Much of the park is flooded. It may be closed at least two weeks. Fire departments were sent to the pool house at Knoebel's Amusement Resort, but firefighters had problems reaching the building due to high water. Chemicals, including chlorine are involved in that fire. The alarm came in a little after 2 a.m."

here's a link to the story: http://www.wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=5084058

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been effected by this devastating flood!

Since hurricane Ivan 2 years ago and now this storm, I'm seriously considering moving closer to Cedar Point! ;)

Closed 2 weeks? On the site they say mostly open by this Saturday (with the exception of the pool). Then again as I glance out my window its raining yet again, not sure how it is up there though. Any idea at all how the fire started? Could it possibly be lightning? *** Edited 6/30/2006 2:15:17 AM UTC by P18***
WNEP rocks. WYOU and WBRE simply don't compare. ;)

With all of the pride people take in Knoebels, I don't find it hard to believe they'll have it open for this weekend, especially being the 4th of July weekend.

If I didn't work I'd volunteer to help them clean up.

I've often wondered from time to time, how to write good poetry- and make it all... Work.

Does anyone know if there was damage to the haunted house?

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Ehh well...Knoebels will recover...I live in Schuylkill County and its clearing up down here...This flood was devistating but, at least it didnt do as much damage as the flood of 1972. I wasnt born yet, but my mom was telling me she remembers watching the animals float down the river at knoebels on T.V.

Well best wishes to knoebels. and Bushkill...

I haven't seen anything about the park on local TV-- I somehow kept missing any stories they had about that or my own hometown. The low lying sections of my town got nailed pretty good Tuesday night and Wednesday. We had the National Guard here. Nobody allowed in or out. No internet cable either. :( But I'm not complaining becuase I know people who had it a lot worse.

My $2.49 rain gauge from Lowe's measured 17.5 freaking inches of rain from 9 AM Sunday to 6 AM Wednesday. Just amazing.

Knowing Knoebels, within a few days there will be signs up showing the water levels from the '06 Flood-- if they're not up already. Hoping they're able to clean up and open things again soon.

Amazing if they had no flooding at HP though. Supposedly Swatara Creek (the one you cross just above the park along Route 39 or 743) was supposed to crest higher than it did during Ivan. One thing that may have helped Hershey is that the creeks have been relatively low. IIRC, they are somewhat able to control flow along Spring Creek (the one that flows through the park). So if they were able to release a lot of water beforehand, they had a lot more capacity to hold the water that did flow in.

^ 17.5 inches? That's insane.
Rathergoodbear I was thinking the same thing about Hershey. Went there last night, and it hadn't flooded at all.

THe water levels look pretty high at Knoebels. I know Dick and co will work hard to get the park back in shape, but man that has to suck. Wonder how much flood insurance he has.

They might not have flood insurance at all. Would you give them flood insurance knowing their past history? I wouldn't, and it's not because I'm a cold, heartless bastard. It just doesn't make economic sense.

If I were the park, I might reconsider the location and relocate to somewhere that doesn't have the flooding possibilites that Knoebels does. Before you say it can't be done, consider that the majority of Knoebel's Rides are portable, and that the land is flat. They might lose some features of the park such as the chairlift ride and the heavy tree cover, but from getting a little bit lost last year, there is a lot of land near the park.

If they HAVE flood insurance, they are paying through the NOSE for it....then again, they'd also be getting their money's worth....

I've heard from a couple people inside the insurance industry that "no new home-owners' policies" would be issues for FL because, well, we have our own water issues (to wit, hurricanes). I'd imagine that KG doesn't have alot of options regarding flood insurance either, so IF they can still get it, they are PAYING for it....

Which means that it is probably cheaper to pay for a flood clean-up every 10 year so than to pay the premium on flood insurance.
Wow... the thought of Knoebels moving is chilling!

Besides, it's not like this happens THAT often. And Knoebels seems to be pretty organized when it does happen. I guess they figure floods are merely the cost of doing business.

If Knoebels moved, it would no longer be Knoebels. Most of the charm of that place is the somewhat random layout in the woods with the streams and all the weird old structures.
Agreed, I don't really see them moving any time soon, thats where it all started, that IS "Knoebels Groves", I don't know how theyd relocate the charm of the park anywhere else, it wouldn't work. What would they call the Roaring Creek Saloon if it wasn't on the roaring creek? The Wharf wouldn't look right without being on the creek/water, and the Crystal Pool would be lost completely which is how the park started. They seem to clean up very well, having rides open only days after the park is under a few feet of water.
Knoebels isn't going to move, it was just a suggestion. And Joe's right, Knoebels wouldn't be Knoebels if it wasn't right where it is.
yeah that's true, but you're right about the thought being "chilling". Then again if they were moving *closer* to me... ;)

Weird question but is there any way they could somehow "control" the creeks so they don't overflow so badly? I don't know really if it's possible, but something not to far right up stream to divert some of the flood water away from the park itself or around it? *** Edited 6/30/2006 7:24:12 PM UTC by P18***
