K'Nex electric motor

I don't know if you have the means, but I'd love to see video of your test runs and experiments. Now I want to go buy a few sets myself. Only problem is I don't have the space to build these things right now...

My method of braking is much less precise, but if you don't snap one side of the purple track into one of the ties, it'll slow the train down without stopping it.

I would think that with a few parts from your local Radio Shack you could mock up a few electro magnets and a few sensors to get a crude LIM going. That would be taking all of this to a new and completely sick level though, not that there is anything wrong with that :)

I actually got a whole bunch of parts together with the intention of building LIM's for my Serpent and then realized that I didn't have any control logic for it. :-P
Rather than invest in that, I just scrapped to project, but it still seems fairly easy to do with a few logic gates, a breadboard, and inductor and some fins to strap to the sides of your train.
