ShaneDenmark, I referred to ASTM F2291, which is the Standard Practice for Design of Amusement Rides and Devices. That is a voluntary standard adopted by the amusement industry as a set of best practices. In practice, several States have adopted various ASTM standards, in whole or in part. It's a concensus standard developed by industry.
I think they should put an opening in the outboard side of the tub, connect the seat belt on the inboard side, and rigidly mount the buckle on the outside of the tub. The operator can easily check it visually, and in the case of small children would have to fasten and unfasten the belt. But an adult would have a long enough arm to reach over and pop the buckle open at the end of the ride. That way you 'protect' the kids but speed things up by not treating the adults like small children.

That sounds very similar to Scrambler type rides. Closing the latch and inserting the pin is not something younger kids can do.
My belt has a pesky pin/buckle combo on it that seems a little harder to connect and disconnect with each passing year.
There's a really good joke there about rides using elastic bands instead of belts for enthusiasts, but I'm not the man to flesh it out.

using the words enthusiast, man and flesh in the same sentence should be a bannable offense.
I knew Larry King was old, but I didn't realize Abe Lincoln was his relative.
And dead Lord, what is that kindergarten artwork behind him? Corn and Jelly Beans?
It seems there's an ... artist ... who creates portraits out of jelly beans. Who found it necessary to create such a portrait with a man who would wear suspenders with jeans as the subject.
Barkeep? Forget the tonic. Just hand me the bottle of gin.

Can we please continue talking about how Larry King is wearing suspenders with blue jeans? Can they implement him as an animatronic to a ride somewhere? I have no idea what the premise of the ride would be, but I can't imagine it would be difficult to make an animatronic Larry King.
It's clear what we need is for Top Gun to be re-themed...with a nod to Everest.
Suspenders: The Ride - with a 30' animatronic Larry King yelling as the train passes.
LOL Forgot about that.
If it weren't for Bronies, coaster enthusiasts would have no one to look down on for their silly interest.
I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned that Kings Island actually has an Intamin ride (White Water Canyon) which is equipped with a seat belt which is elastic.
I think that hits almost all of the laugh lines in this thread. But oddly enough, this isn't a joke!
(maybe it should be!)
