Fans of Kings Island’s Son of Beast roller coaster now have the chance to take home a memento of the shuttered ride. The Mason theme park announced today it is offering limited edition plaques featuring a piece of track from the coaster.

I hope this money is going to a charitable cause.
Why? Would it be wrong if they were selling parts to make money for the company?

But, there are interested parties that likely sparked this situation.
Victims, looking to get even?

I have no problem with the park making money. But, most things they sell have some kind of material value. Like food and merchandise. The only thing here that cost them any money was making the plaque. Is it worth spending $100 on that? In my opinion, only if the profits went to charity.

But they are not forcing anyone to buy. If you think the price is too high for what you are getting, do not buy. This isn't even like the captive situation of the "people have to eat." A lot of people do not find value in buying parts of the coaster. Other people may find value in it. So be it.

Uh, isn't this "merchandise"? And if someone is willing to pay for it, doesn't that give it material value?
Probably charging $100 so that people won't buy them for the sake of burning them. At least that's what I would have done.

GoBuck's, I know they aren't forcing anyone to buy. I didn't say they weren't allowed to sell anything they choose. At $100, I doubt many will. They could have sold a lot more and turned it into a nice bit of PR if they pick a nice charity to throw the money at. They'd get more value out of the PR than any profit from the couple pieces of scrap they sell.
bigboy, maybe "material value" wasn't the right word. My point was, they took something that was ultimately going to get thrown away and turned it into a souvenir. By material value, I meant that they pay for food, mark it up and resell it, they buy t-shirts, mark them up and resell them. This is something that was going to be torn down and thrown away. 99.9% still is going to be thrown away or recycled. If it had real value they would resell the whole ride. But it doesn't. It only has sentimental value to a select group of people. So did pieces of Disaster Transport at Cedar Point. And all the money from the that pieces Cedar Point sold went to Give Kids the World.
Kings Island has helped out "Give Kids the World" with the Coasting for Kids event and also helped out "A Kid Again" with the Diamondback auction. I thought it would have been nice if they would follow in the steps of their sister park.
Are they allowed to sell the pieces for profit? Yes. Will I stop visiting the park if they do? No.

Wouldn't burning them actually be a pretty stupid thing to do?
The trick was to surrender to the flow.
Yes, but this is CoasterBuzz, and every third post about Son Of Beast is required to be about burning.
Mention that coaster and everyone here turns in to friggin' Beavis.
Hi
A section of laminated track, still bolted together would be a sweet souvenir. CF, I would be willing to pay $100, perhaps alittle more Or perhaps a section of the steel looped track would be sweet.
Souvenirs may be firewood/ junk to others. But, I one of those fans that collects the "game used" stuff.
I only rode the SOB once back in 2001. One of those "one rides" I will never forget, ever.

Hey Butthead - I am sporting wood!
I think it's awesome that Kings Island is providing fans of SOB a way to hang on to the ride.
If I were a SOB fan, I'd buy one of these in a second and hang it on my office wall. Then, anytime I was feeling particularly nostalgic, I'd take it off the wall, give my desk chair a quick spin, and with a wistful tear in my eye, bash my face repeatedly off the plaque.
Ah, memories. RIP Sonny.

I called and asked about this today. There are 3 things available.
Large Plaque with pictures and metal track piece ($100)
Wooden support structure piece ($50)
13 in metal bolt ($25)
They are only making 250 plaques, not sure about the other items. Support structure piece will have some sort of small plaque on it. Latter 2 pieces come with a certificate of authenticity of some sort. They don't seem to be shipping anything until the end of October.
