Kings Island removing Son of Beast

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Kings Island issued a brief press release today indicating the removal of Son of Beast:

After a lengthy evaluation of all alternatives, Kings Island announced today the decision has been made to remove the Son of Beast roller coaster to make room for future park expansion.

The dismantling of the ride, which last operated in 2009, will begin later this summer.

I knew it sounded funny when I posted it, but forgot to go back and reword it. lol

I was rebutting this guys point that one lady spread falsehoods about the ride being rough and that was the reason no one liked the ride. I have no idea who he is talking about.

Single women usually flatter me, and then I destroy their dreams of being my girlfriend. I have never been hurt by a single woman. lol

I rode SOB only once (de-loopified)... It was not fantastic. It was not great. It was not even good. But it was a roller coaster and I am glad I rode it, kind of.

Here's what I can't figure out--nobody's ever before taken the screen name Beast? How is that possible?

A testament that both he and his son are lousy coasters.

This is about a gigantic pile of crap that epitomizes the word "FAIL" printed in white caps and set in Arial Black.

The irony being that the use of Arial Black instead of Helvetica Black is also a fail. ;) ...which just makes that choice all the more appropriate.

As someone who actually didn't hate SoB...it was not a great or even good coaster. And it was derieded by enthusiasts long before any woman brought a lawsuit against it. It's never been popular.

I rode it 4 times over 1 visit with the loop and Premier trains. I didn't hate it. But it was far from a good coaster.

I'm only sad that it's not getting the Iron Horse treatment as I've seen what that did for Texas Giant (my current overall #1 coaster). But I'm not sad to see SoB go.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Roller Coaster Blasphemy! Beast is still my favorite coaster of all time. Son of Beast will probably always be my least favorite coaster of all time. lol

"Loop? I am not your father." ;~P

Beast, last ride of the season, no/minimal brakes (edited to reflect brakes instead of trims), favorite ride. Does KI still do this? If they do and you have not been there for it make the plans you won't regret it. Son of Beast, once favorite loop at KI, least favorite ride.

You will not get a ride on the Beast with reduced trims. The Beast has magnetic trim brakes. The braking force is proportional to the speed of the train when it hits the trims, such that the train speed coming out of the brakes is remarkably consistent.

So the answer would be "no, they no longer do it" ;)

The magnetic brakes were added to the Beast in 2002, so it has been that way for a long time now. Personally, I wouldn't want to ride it at night *without* the brakes, because it goes really fast as it is. If you ride in the morning and then as the last ride of the night, you will notice a substantial difference in train speed.
