Kingda Ka testing after long closure, will need state approval to open

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

More than a month after a malfunction during a test run damaged some parts, Six Flags Great Adventure’s much-touted Kingda Ka roller coaster remains closed. The 456-foot-tall coaster opened to great fanfare in May, only to be closed June 8 after a malfunction during a test run. No one was on board at the time. They started testing the ride again Thursday.

Read more from AP via KYW/Philadelphia.

Glad to hear the ride is finally testing. Should only be a little bit until it re-opens.
Yes , it will be a live once again.

"Should only be a little bit until it re-opens."

You're obviously not familiar with how the state operates. They'll be in no rush to give SFGAdv the green light.

True Moosh, oh so true. With NJ's ultra strict regs, I wouldn't count on it being back in service this season. They're going to crawl, emphisis on crawl, all over that ride.
One interesting thing in this article is the implication that the failure was a design issue. "Liner bolts were enlarged and increased in number to prevent future problems."
^ This IS an Intamin ride, or course it had to have some sort of design problem.

/easy jab at an awesome company

And besides it's Kingda Krap! What'd you expect? :-)

Oh no, trust me. I'm well aware of how the state works. And when I said little bit, I didn't mean within the next 2 hours..lol I meant sometime within the next two weeks. I'm not expecting anything this week, I'm thinking first week of August.

Im still surprised that they would decided to install this intamin after all the trouble with Top Thrill. So they install one thats even taller than TTD. If thought that the same thing would happen here, a park trying to push the limits even more and intamin can't do it with out design flaws. If I were six flags I would have just made the better judgement call and install a coaster a bit more original than that.

Ha! The coaster is still a flop! :)
I would wager that SF ordered it right after CP announced it was getting TTD. I can hear the SF execs screaming "why did we buy that!" last year while watching the problems with TTD.
Thank you, Kingda Ka will finally be operating! Time to start saving up money to head to Jackson, NJ.

Wow.. some of you CP Fanboys are amazing.

CF or SF...it really doesn't matter much.

They both have a cool launch and a neat turning drop. Kingda Ka is just TTD with a hill on the brake run, a nice themed home, a weird vibration and uncomfortable restraints.

I went on the thing before it's "test failure." They may both be fun...but, they're really not that big of a deal!

Atleast no one was hurt! Well, maybe CP will retain title of "World's Tallest & Fatest" b/c this ride is not in operation. The rides have to be in opertaion to count toward a record, don't they. Because if they don't that is very stupid!
well, i If the worlds tallest Ferris Wheel in the world broke down, would it be stripped of its title until it got back in operation? If the worlds tallest building had to be evacuated, would its title of worlds tallest building be stripped? if the world's talles man sat down, would he be stripped of his title? the answer to each of these is no. it would be stupid to do so.

Therefore Kingda Ka will retain the title of worlds tallest and fastest, because in reality it is

Odd that someone mentions that... I got a onride photo of Top Thrill Dragster on June 29, 2005, and the back of the keychain clearly states "The Tallest and Fastest on the Planet!" Guess CP just wont let that title go...

Do you think that the "TTD tallest and fastest" will come down by the end of this year?

Anyway, the fact that Kingda Ka is once again opening is great news for the coaster enthusiast crowd.

Can you say CF is too cheap to throw out the stock they had bought of stuff for TTD being the tallest and fastest in the world or is it that most of the GP don't care what it says all they want is the picture? They will use it up and then use TTD generic stuff without the comment on tallest and fastest.

It will be great to have Kingda Ka back in operation when Jersey says they can operate it.

I did hear from a State inspector that Kingda Ka will not open this year. I just hope that the next coaster that SFGAd adds has at least some originality.*** This post was edited by sluggo907 7/28/2005 12:20:12 AM ***
