Kentucky governor approves of plan to reopen Kentucky Kingdom

Posted | Contributed by VitaminsAndGravy

Gov. Steve Beshear says he approves of a plan to reopen the Kentucky Kingdom theme park. The final details of a plan may change depending on negotiations between state officials and the lone group — led by businessman Ed Hart — to respond to the state's request for proposals. Beshear says he's behind the deal and he expects the fair board to approve.

1.5 million for new rides doesn't sound like very much to me considering that SF pulled out the 2 best (operating) coaster there.

Before you can be older and wiser you first have to be young and stupid.

With 2014 being so close, they wouldn't be able to have any large rides finished at this point. Hart has mentioned many times that he wants a new B&M to replace Chang.

Thunder Run and Greezed Lightnin' are/were the 2 best coasters there, IMO. Of course, who knows what condition either of those two are in? (Answer: HW folks do, and they said "pass").

For whatever it may be worth (or not), Chang was *better* at GAdv than I ever remember it at SFKK....still awful, but not quite AS awful...I hate stand-ups, LOL.

Hart mentioned that Greezed Lighting will never reopen and that Twsited Twins wont open in 2014 but will the year or two after... or so he says. I would assume that Thunder Run is near the top of his coaster wish-list because it was his baby back in 1990.

The RFP said the B&M was for the 2015 season.

Another park somewhat close to my home is always good news. I regret not ever visiting the park when SF owned it. I'll probably hold off on a visit until the new B&M opens though.

Don't.

Edited and noted. You delete yours and I'll delete this one, and this CB page will be pretty. :)

No, I meant don't regret it. It sucked.

LOL. I re-edit it then. HAHAHA.

I know it sucked. That's why I never went. But now I feel like I missed out on something.

Lord Gonchar's avatar

I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like it'll be back to sucking soon enough.

Sucking with even fewer rides than before!

Hmm...I think I just coined the park's new tagline.

In that case, it's down to Thunder Run and the tamest Breakdance on the planet...and perhaps the worst SLC I've ridden (in competition with the abomination named Gauntlet at Magic Springs that supposedly featured a "smoother ride"....heh).

Bottom line: HW is too nearby, and has *the* waterpark - I don't see KK being able to compete when they're pretty much rebuilding from scratch. Operating expenses for dry rides are very high, and even getting those left in operable condition is going to be a BIG undertaking. When Ed Hart first built KK, there was no such compeition across the border in Indiana...
