Kennywood....worth stopping?

Two words that alone should make you stop...Potato Patch ;).

"On the moon nerds get their pants pulled down and spanked with moonrocks."

Ive been going to KW ever since I was a little kid, we always drove to Pittsburgh to visit releatives and we always went to Kennywood. Jack Rabbit was my first "real" coaster. So many amazing memories from that place over the years. Kennywood is the type of park that makes you remember what amusement parks are really about. Great food, clean atmosphere, beautiful midways, and some of the best and most unique rides you'll find anywhere. Steel Phantom was and still is the most overall terrifying ride ive ever been on. Nothing has ever really compared to the intensity of that thing, even though coasters are now way faster and taller. While Phantoms Revenge is tamer, its an amazing hyper with without a doubt the best second drop on any coaster, and airtime that makes Magnum look like the Beast. As for the Classics, Jack Rabbit's double dip is pure rollercoaster bliss, and racer can be a joy if people are actually hand slapping. Thunderbolt is just wicked, and Exterminator is by far the best wild mouse ive ever been on. And there's on particular gag in one particular walkthrough that makes me giddy every time I walk over it. Go to Kennywood. You wont regret it.

As a little side note, they're building a new hotel at the Waterfront Entertainment Complex...There is no date set to when it'll be open, but this will be a nice thing to have, rather than having to go out into West Mifflin or Monroeville for a place to stay.

99% sure it won't be open for this season. Why? It's the company my wife works for building it. It'll be a 86 room (I believe, it's 80-something) Courtyard. They're not looking at even naming a GM until the end of Summer. We almost waited to come to Pittsburgh so she'd get that hotel, but the timing of completion kept getting pushed back to the point where it wasn't feasible with my daughter starting school - so we ended up over here by the airport.

Probably wouldn't affect most people anyway. Courtyard rates are a bit higher than I've seen most enthusiasts want to spend. The enthusiast credo seems to be "a place to sleep for as cheap as possible" - and that's not generally the Courtyard.

All I gotta say is ride the backseat of the thunderbolt and Phantom's Revenge. Talk about crazy coasters!

The future is in your hands!

I wish I had said that:-)

Atmosphere is what makes it so special. Unlike a lot of other parks, I find it hard to leave KW at the end of the night. I just don't want it to end.

The park's wood, imho, isn't spectacular, but is definately sufficient. Just don't expect them to be incredible. That's the only negitive thing that I can say about the park.

It seems like the rides are very well maintained. Some of the flats are run verrrrry fast.

Kennywood, in my opinion, is the best of its class.
If your going to kennywood to ride the coasters only. You missed kennywood and what it's all about

Chuck

Kennywood is a must stop! Phantoms Revenge is one of my favorite Steel Coasters (I don't know how it runs now with the trims toward the end, rode it when it when it hadn't been open very long) Has a nice collection of wooden coasters, park atmosphere is very peaceful and of course there is potato patch fries..........mmmmmm (homer like gurgle)

Don't pass up this Gem of a park! *** Edited 2/21/2004 12:24:04 PM UTC by Goku2216***

WARNING: You are no longer who you were and tomorrow is now yesterday. In the event of an emergency, do not become alarmed. Move Quickly to the nearest exit.
Go go go go go!!! It was the best first time park experiance I've ever had, and I only got to hit the park the first time last year from about 9-midnite for Phantom Fright Nites. Worth the drive, worth the mone, but as was said, watch out going to the wrong side of that bridge, as you will be in a bad part of town.

Best. Classic. Park. EVah!!!

I rode Phantom with trims and without trims and couldn't tell the difference.

I actually think that Thunderbolt is a top ten wooden coaster. Massive airtime+huge laterals+sweet pacing= my #2 wooden coaster. Of course those awesome rides were during the rain.

Good point. That's usually what I do as well, unless I can stay right across the street from the park. There is nothing finer than waking up to coaster test runs. :)

On my one and only visit, I had some issues with the professionalism of the staff (pretty sure I caught them on an *off* day), but I highly recommend that everyone go to Kennywood. I still had a good time, and the rides are TDF. If you even can go, you must...

Yes, most enthusiasts seem to. In this case I don't consider myself "most enthusiasts" ;)

I'm a flat out hotel snob. My wife has worked hotels since I met her (way longer than I care to admit). I know what it takes to run a place and turn a profit. I wouldn't stay in one of those $39.99 a night places if you paid me - to give rooms away at that rate - something's got to give and to be quite honest, when I think (and hear the 'inside' stories) of ways hotels could cut corners it gives me the heebie jeebies.

Granted there are exceptions and at times you can score a great rate under certain circumstances. But in general if rates are that low, then...well...no thank you.

Guys, this guy's from Philly - the "bad neighborhood" close to Kennywood is *nothin* to this guy! Hey man, if you want some directions, drop me an email, I've been told I give the best KW directions! ;)

WV > PITT in bball? pffff. Have fun in the acc playing duke, north carolina, maryland etc etc next season. :)

But seriously, the neighborhoods around kennywood arent all that bad, especially compared to what surrounds most of philly.

Kennywood is a must visit, in fact I would probably pick Kennywood over woa if I were from out of town. But thats me.

For anyone read an earlier post of mine, I feel stupid. I said there was nothing new last year; HELLO King Kahuna Topspin, retheme of Enterprise, and Pirate Ship, not to mention those spiffy new bathrooms. It's hard to get old:)

Your right, I was thinking of v-tech. I realized that about half way through the game.
