Kennywood Question

I am going to Kennywood this week and was wondering if there is an entrance closer to Phantom's Revenge than the main gate. Thanks.

Nope, there's only one entrance to Kennywood. The park is small, and there's no "running of the bulls", so don't sweat it.

Actually, the main entrance is very close to Phantom's Revenge. As soon as you walk through the tunnel, make a left and you'll see the PR lift hill. Directly underneath its structure is the queue entrance.
Now, I'm a youngin', and until last year, hadn't been to Kennywood in about seven years. But anyway, I have memories from when I was an even smaller youngin' of entering somewhere near Pirate. (I can remember it being one of the first things I could see. Or maybe I just have a really screwed up memory.)

I'm really rambling, but my point is: Didn't there used to be an entrance nearer to the Phantom, or at least, where the Phantom stands today?

Maybe there was an entrance over there for the parking lot where Lost Kennywood now stands. Then again, Pirate isn't all that far from the current entrance. The only other past entrance I know of (from mother) is between Racer and Jack Rabbit, where the bus parking lot is now.

Lynch, that sounds about right. While personally, I don't remember entering near the Phantom as I would too consider myself a "youngin'" but before Lost Kennywood opened, that area was a parking lot. So after consulting my Kennywood Bibles, I can tell you that up to 1992, there were two entrances - the one that used to be under the loop of the Laser Loop, and the tunnel we are familiar with today. So in 1991, you probably entered right under or near the Phantom. In 1992, the single entrance was inaugurated.

I hope that answers your question, as I do not remember that entrance. Maybe someone out there who does can further answer your question.
Makes sense. I knew it was a parking lot over there, and knew Laser Loop was right there too. Thanks.

Well, you guys have the right idea. The area that's now Lost Kennywood used to be pay parking (across the street was free), and you entered the park under the Laser Loop (and, I believe, under Steel Phantom, but I KNOW you entered under Laser Loop)

The second entrance to the park was indeed under the Laser Loop, and under the Phantom, but only for its first year. After that, the Tri-Star was placed there, and the year after construction for Lost Kennywood was taking place with the Tri-Star being sent to Idlewild and renamed the Trinado.

The "Kennyville 5 and 10" gift shop (formerly the "Steel Phantom Sport Shop") directly under the lift hill used to be Guest Relations and Group Sales. Groups, school busses, etc. all entered through the Loop entrance. (That's also why there's a Cotton Candy Cart near there. The other, of course, is near the tunnel entrance. Those things get packed on people's way out.)

It's much easier to get people out of the park at night if we can flush you towards only one entrance, too. No confusion where to meet, etc.

For about 4-5 years after that entrance was gone, however, people still headed up there and looked for it at the end of the day.

Very interesting. I'm positive I remember the Steel Phantom Sport Shop from way back; the memory of looking in there with my brother shortly after my first Phantom ride is clear as day. Was Steel Phantom's entrance and/or exit right there as well?

Yes, for the first couple of years of the Phantom's exit was right next to the sport shop. (Immediately to the right next to the now defunct mini-golf course.) It was moved to the current place in Lost Kennywood because the park management figured revenues at the Lost Kennywood stands and ridership on LK rides would go up if people were funnelled out that way. They were VERY right. (This was before the big signature attractions of Pitt Fall and Exterminator. Lost Kennywood became a ghost town around 7 or 8 pm.)

Also, the original entrance to the Phantom was where it ended up at, next to the Chuckles Challenge game and Fruit Gazebo refreshment stand. For about 3 weeks, however, it was moved to where the current PR line begins. Revenue at the Fruit Gazebo went way down without the line outside and the entrance was quickly moved back. It was moved this year presumably to fit in the large queue line configuration.

Yes the old entrence is gone, but I did notice some trees that were cut down along the inside of the fence. I forget where they were exactly but I think it was near Whipeout. Probably nothing, but you never know........

I dance like a special ed. kid that was given a sparkler.
The main reason the removed that second entrance was due to people having to cross the busy highway to get to the their cars. Now you have no choice but to go through the tunnel. After they removed that entrance they added lost kennywood shortly afterwards.
