We started the 5 hr. trek to Kennywood from my home north of Detroit. I have to say that Kennywood was a LOT more scenic than I thought. Being able to see Pittsburg rocks. We bought 4 ride all day passes, a very good deal.
First we hit Pitt Bull, because we couldn't find the Thunderbolt. The park could use maps. Barely any wait for this Intamin Giant Drop, it was fun, but it jostled a bit on the drop. I forgot how powerful these rides are! Sweet view of PR, ....drool.....
We hit Thunderbolt next, it was raining, so they could only run half a train at a time (I'm assuming because the skid brakes were a little slippery). I was impressed, but not blown away. How was this thing rated #1? Anyways, no headrests, no seat dividers, and one lap bar just rocks. I was everywhere, including slamming my partner on those awesome lateral turns! ;)
We went to the Exterminator next, and I couldn't wait for it, something completely different. The theming wasn't as heavy as I expected it to be, but the ride just plain rocked. We we're in a blissful state once that car started spinning. Everybody was screaming, faster, faster! Great.
After the Exterminator, we hit the Whip, which I thought was very cool. We went to the Potato Patch, and had some REAL French fries. Very good. We had gravy, cheese, and plain fries. It's the little things like this that give a park so much personality. We hit the Turtle after we ate our fries. The Turtle was a neat little flat ride that gave a bit of movement and airtime.
Finally it was time to hit Phantom's Revenge, and man, was my anticipation through the roof. We waited about thirty minutes, very acceptable. It looks like the trims are just about ready to be installed; two-train operation would be nice. We rode in the back row of the second to last car. Once we started twisting around that curving drop, I knew I was in for one crazy ride. Suddenly, we hit the pullout, and the Gs were massive! The second drop wasn't as good as the first, but that train just rockets around that beautiful curve. I was actually thrown forward, then, we hit the turn around the Turtle, making my lower back take all the G's, ouch! That whip only made it better. The train hops throughout the bunny hops like nobody's business, and the airtime is wonderful. It blows Magnum out of the water, but not as good as MF. Excellent job Kennywood.
Aero 360 was down, but I rode the same ride at Seabreeze, so it was no big deal. As we were waiting in line for the Racer I saw a Coasterbuzz T-Shirt. No way! I was so excited to meet, JanFrederick(sp?), and I introduced myself. It was SO cool to meet a fellow Buzzer for the first time! Wear those shirts folks! The Racer was a little disappointing, but still had its moments.
The Jack Rabbit had an incredibly long wait until they put the second train on (thank God). Really the only good moment on the Jack Rabbit is the double dip, but the airtime it gives is VERY forceful.
We finished the day with one more ride on Exterminator, Pit Bull, and the Thunderbolt.
Kennywood is an amazing park with friendly employees, and a great atmosphere. The pricing is fair, and the park is beautiful. A coaster enthusiasts dream.........
