Kennywood 10/21/01: Discovery Channel!

Associated parks:
None

The Discovery Channel was at Kennywood this past Monday and Tuesday, October 15 and 16.  I couldn't get out of work, and thought I'd missed my chance to squeak in a few more laps on Phantom's Revenge.  However, the weather didn't cooperate with the film crew on Tuesday.

So after a trip to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure on Friday night (trip report forthcoming), I sleep in late on Saturday.  I get up around noon, check email, and there's an email to the Western PA ACE members -- Discovery Channel was returning on Sunday at 10:00am for more footage.

I went in expecting maybe a few laps, HOPING I'd get 5 to put my lifetime Phantom's Revenge count at an even 50.  I not only made that tally, but CRUSHED it :)

My riding partner for the entire shoot would be CoasterBuzz's own LoriU, who was also there on Monday.  We spent at least half our time in the back row, giving it up if people asked but otherwise camping out -- we're airtime fanatics ;)

44 laps later, the fine folks from Termite Productions decided they had enough footage.  This was well beyond any expectation I'd had.  One more ride and I'd have gotten as many in one day as I'd managed all summer, and I was one of the more frequent riders. :)

Many thanks to Kennywood, Discovery Channel, Termite Productions (the people filming and presumably producing Extreme Rides 2002), and ACE.  What a day...

I seen about 4 of those 44 laps today when I drove up to the Kennyville area when I heard about the shoot.  It seems like the Phantom still runs the same, and I noticed that there looked like one of the trims were installed, is that true?

You slept till noon?  Must be nice.  I was up at 9 after SFWoA Friday night.

It was a great day and we couldn't have asked for better weather.  After 6 rides on Monday, I never imagined 44 today.  Everyone was really nice and PR was outstanding as usual.  Thanks again to all those that Greg mentioned.

You didn't have another hour's drive afterwards ;)

The brackets are certainly in place, but from the back it was hard to tell if the trims were actually there.  If they were, they weren't in use yet :)

I got you both beat.  After our night at SFWoA (left at approx 12:10am Sat morn) we drove to Rodeway Inn (to find it CLOSED!  Who closes a hotel on a Fri night?  Honestly?)  and then finally to Comfort Inn, where we finally crashed at 2:30am.  Got up at 8:45am for the continental breakfast, then off to a nice 13.5hr day at CP (I already miss the place).

Not to mention leaving CP at 12:30am EST and working at SFGAm at 11:45am CST.  Talk about dedication to work! :)

It was great seeing you guys on Fri night at SFWoA.  Can't wait for next year!

Cedar Piont is nothing with out MF. Come to SFMM and see whats happening. Just give us a Giga coaster and bam. CP out of the pic.

Yeah...well...you're still young.  It was good seeing you too.  See you around next year.

And Greg, one more hour of driving means you get 3 more hours of sleep.  I wish children upon you.  ;)

Hey, as soon as I find someone who's roughly my age, single, and sane, that could eventually become a possibility. At this point in my life, though, that's looking like a difficult proposition (especially the last bit ;) )

To put this back on subject, some of the equipment the Discovery people were using was surprisingly basic (the little mikes, duct tape, etc), and some was VERY cool and hi-tech. I really want one of those "lipstick cameras" (a lens in a tube roughly the size of a lipstick case, with a wire leading to the actual recorder)

I was also amused by the guy from the radio station asking us if we were getting paid for this. Our reply was "The park let us in, and we're getting more rides today than we managed all summer. That's payment enough..." :)

Actually, they also fed us pizza and donuts. Not a bad deal, huh?

Kara -- I wish ;)

Greg, did you get a chance to touch the cape entrance?  If so, what did it feel like.  I thing that it is made from styrofoam or something.:)
