TR – Kennywood – 6/24
This was my first trip to Kennywood (my home park is Cedar Point). I have been meaning to go for several years, but when I heard they where tearing down the Steal Phantom, I knew I had to go this year.
Two buddies and myself left from Cleveland at 7:00 and got to Pittsburgh by 9:30. The park opened at 10:30 and we headed for the Phantom. At 10:00 the rides opened. I was amazed that the operators did not send any test trains. The first train out of the station was filled with customers. We waited for the front and got on the 3rd train of the day. The ride was awesome. The first sweeping hill is a lot of fun and the speed on the 2nd hill is really accentuated by the closeness of the hillside. The pullout is pretty intense, and then you hit a break and go through the inversions. I was expecting the worse from this ride, but was very surprised – it was not nearly as rough as people have been saying. We got off the first ride wondering why people complain about the Phantom. It was not Millennium Force smooth, but it was not all that bad. And the ride is pretty intense for the entire run, the break really does not take away from the speed. I was also surprised by the compactness of the layout. I am used to Cedar Points sprawling coasters, and the Phantom fits in a very small space. We rode Phantom twice more latter in the day in the very last car. The speed was even more intense in back and it was not much rougher then the front. The lines where pretty much a walk on even though they where only running one train all day.
Next we rode the Thunderbolt. We where surprised that they would not let you ride alone, but after one ride we knew why! This ride has a ton of fast right hand turns that just beats up the person sitting on the left side of the car. There is one turn where you feel like you are going to be thrown out of the car. You get to ride some classic coasters and one of the fastest coasters in the world (at least until the end of this year). I hope Kennywood replaces Steal Phantom with something good so I have excuse to make a trip back next year.
