Kenndy Space Center to get Coaster

Kinda makes me wish for a job with NASA and a mission to be aborted!

I was just watching some episodes of the Thunderbirds. They used a reverse version of this to take the astronaughts up into the rocket. I think the episode was "Sun Probe": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbirds_%28TV_series%29

Actually, peabody, it looks to me more like the Eurofighter than a dive machine. A dive machine car is a lot wider.

I wonder if RCDB will post this as a coaster......
Just hope they don't let any ops from SF anywhere near this thing. :)

jan, woohoo for the Thunderbirds! When I was a kid I so wanted to be a Tracy, even if they were only clay.

I have a special place in my heart for the Thunderbirds. That Series was the First Example of Science Fiction that I ever saw. The T-Birds were "Doing their Thing" TWO YEARS before I saw the antics on one James T. Kirk and Company! Three years ago I was in a Best Buy Store and I saw an employee placing new DVDs on the rack. Getting Closer I saw one of the shows he was putting on the rack was the entire collection of Thunderbirds Episodes. The next box he picked up never made it to the shelf! :)

DVD - the cure from the Commercial Blues!

RGB, SF ops are harmless.. it's the SF Maintenance staff that you have to worry about ;)

If I need to get out of the shuttle in an emergency situation, and Toro ops are slowing down my evacuation from said shuttle.....they might wanna get OUT OF MY WAY.... ;)
Keep in the mind that the new Ares I rocket will be about 300' tall (Ares V will be 360'), so we're talking about a *major* drop on this thing. Not to mention, the pad itself is quite high as it is.

However, I'm not so sure this will be that practical. I think something more along the lines of a Demon Drop type escape would work better. Who knows if it ever actually comes true, but I doubt you'll be seeing one at the Visitor Center, this thing will be a BIG deal.

I wouldn't expect a foreign company to get the bid either... *** Edited 11/7/2006 2:21:13 AM UTC by Cory Patrick***

This is the government we're talking about. If the low bid is from Iraq that's who will build it! :)

It'll be a coaster, so I imagine he will.

I could think of a few I wouldn't necessarily want to ride on... TOGO, Arrow, Vekoma...
In addition to my comment above, I might be wrong. This might not go up for bids. They might just outright award a $2 billion contract to Haliburton to build it instead ;)

too bad this wasn't announced a few years ago. Arrow could have implemented that Fishhook design, and it could of helped them from financial problems. They might even still be in business as their own company. *** Edited 11/7/2006 4:31:02 PM UTC by Turbo***

Well, if any CF ops were near it, they'd make sure to double-check all the seatbelts, and wait for the safety speech to finish before dispatching (which is not something you want in an emergency evac situation)

If it were the El Toro ride Ops they'd make sure you are "Stapled" ;)

I booted up my copy pf the "Sun Probe" episode of Thunderbirds and lo and behold, there is a Mechinism (Used to move the "Solarnauts" into their Space Capsule) that has an uncanny appearence to the Escape mechinism proposed by NASA. This is one of the great things I like about these old Sci-Fi Shows. Many of the things we now take for granted were envisioned by these Shows. Here is a list of things we use now that were envisioned in these shows.

Star Trek Cell Phones

Diskettes

CD/DVD-Roms

"Stealth" Technology

Thunderbirds Laptop Computers

Tunnel Boring Machines

Senior Citizen Scooters

Lost in Space Internet Purchasing.

Maybe some of you out there can spot other things that we now use that were envisioned in other Shows.

The Submarine had already been invented when Mr. Verne wrote that Novel. (The First one, called "The Turtle" saw action in the Revolutionary War. The People using it were trying to put an explosive charge on a British Ship, but they put the Charge on the wrong ship!) DOH!
