Karaoke Revolution 2 review

I picked up KR2 last night at my wife's request, and we played it for about 2 hours.

I was more than a little underwhelmed. I thought that since this was a new game and not an expansion disc, we'd see some major changes, but all the menu screens, menu music, loading screens, graphics, everything looks and sounds exactly the same.

There are two new "venues" to sing in, and the other seven or so are repeats. There are also a few new characters.

Of course the songs are all new, but there are far fewer songs on this mix that I actually like. First of all, I generally hate pop music, and I'm not much for country music either, and there's quite a few of each on here. For some reason I really like "Toxic," the Britney Spears song, and "Friends in Low Places" and (yep) "Papa Don't Preach" are kinda fun to sing. But the 2 or 3 rock selections suck ("I Hate Everything About You"?? That is one of the worst songs ever. How about Puddle of Mudd's "She Hates Me"?).
I thought for sure we'd see something like System of a Down's "Chop Suey," that song seems made for this game.

There are a couple of new modes. You can do a medley of songs, which is kind of pointless. I like the "short" versions of songs, which eliminates that boring long period of "ooohs" and "mmmms" and infinitely repeating chorus at the end of most songs.

But in the end, it's not enough to charge another $40 bucks for. This should have been a $20 expansion disc.
