Journey to Atlantis called "sore thumb" by local politican

A new attraction to draw visitors to San Diego's SeaWorld opens Memorial Day weekend, and even though the ride has been in the works for several years, it remains a sore point with some San Diegans. A vocal councilwoman says the park lied about the appearance of the ride.

Read more from KGTV/San Diego.

By letting PTA calibur politics dictate Sea World will only get frustrated and possible leave the location altogether. Only a possibility, but I am sure Long Beach or Orange County would welcome just such a tourist attraction in their backyard.

Most in the San Diego area forget that they are transplanted from the rustbelt, either from Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, etc. San Diego benefits from everything, including the Mexicans heading to LA at 3am, they have a great new Convention Center, and the state's budget issues will not effect any day to day services there.

Of course, if Sea World packed up and left, that Donna Frye broad would just be happy with that poor excuse Belmont Park with wanna be gangsters wearing handkerchiefs over their head sitting in the parking lot eating ice cream.

It is necessary to expand into amusement rides that provide a level of thrill. Sea World Orlando is still a great place to learn about marine life and animal habitats-even with Kraken and JTA, those make it alot better. Not only because A, it gives the park more public appeal (and make it more fun), but B, it also allows learning to be fun. I also learned something from Kraken when it opened. I didn't know what the name came from, now I know it is a mythical creature.

Besides, we already have purely educational facilities. There called schools. have some fun.

you never know though, they may tear it down to make her feel better :-)
Agent J. She wants to bulldoze that, too.
jeez i dont even care about journey to atlantis. they should have built a REAL roller coaster. i mean all the other big sea worlds have them so why cant we? there isnt even one good coaster in san diego. why cant we get a nice B&M?

Write your local politician. ;)
janfrederick: Believe me, I'm actually not opposed to coasters at Sea World, but I do understand where they're coming from.

However, as far as traffic goes, you're completely nuts if you think the local roadways can handle it. My family went to Sea World about a year ago, and the traffic was nightmarish, at best. The road leading to Sea World (whose name eludes me at the moment) was completely jammed. Sending more traffic it there could potentially back up to I-5 or I-8, at which point, I can guarantee the local residents would REALLY be opposed to coasters at the park.

Again, I actually would LOVE to see a few coasters there, when I go to see my family, the only option I really have is the Giant Dipper at Belmont. I just figured, as a San Diego native, and having lived there for a good 4/5 of my life, I would try to give the opposing point of view, or at least shed some light on it.

Isn't Mrs. Frye the wife of Skip Frye, the guy who started the Surfrider Foundation? If so, her position on these issues shouldn't be a surprise at all, and for all her posturing against Sea World on this, I think she's actually been a very important voice on the SD City Council.

Oh, and about Golden Hills, it's not exactly an upscale neighborhood, but it's actually becoming one. A friend of mine bought a HUGE house out there and has fixed it up enough that it was featured on a historic homes show on Ch. 15 out there. Yes, I know 15 is crap upon crap, but nonetheless, one must assume the home has become pretty impressive. There are many people discovering that there are amazing homes in the area, and it's making a huge comeback, kinda like how the Gaslamp used to be a nightmare. If I could afford it, I might buy there too :)

Actually, there are a couple different ways to get to Sea World. You might have gone on a day when other events were happening in the area. I drive by just about every weekend and haven't seen traffic that looked all that bad. Even if it is backed up to the 8, the park is just across the river there.

I don't know much about her record, but if she's doing anything to cut down on all the sewage spills that we've been plagued with, then more power to her.

It just seems that this is her way of getting attention, since it's a bit late to do anything about the ride. And I'm sure she was fully aware of the designs for a long time now.

Yah, I'll probably be priced out of Golden Hill soon too. Dang housing prices! Perhaps we should be more anti-business so that there'd be fewer jobs and fewer people and cheaper houses. ;)

I know a couple of ways to get to Sea World, but when it took us a good 90 minutes just to get from the beginning of the traffic jam to the point at which we had parked the car, that seemed beyond ridiculous. We did take pretty much the main route (get off I-5 round about where the road to Fiesta Island is, I think it's around Tecolote Canyon Road), but given that many tourists will also be using that route, I would think capacity either on that route or for the parking gates needs major improvement. As is, the park wasn't that crowded that day...

I would also be willing to bet Donna Frye is at least doing something about the sewage spills. When I lived down there, I voted for her. But yes, I'm sure this has something to do with getting attention, especially for upcoming votes.

And as far as housing prices go, tell me about it. I moved from San Diego to LA a few years ago, and it's even worse up here. I make what in most part of the country would be considered pretty good money, but I have no idea how I'll even be able to afford a down payment on a condo, much less a house. Maybe someday....

If Frye really cared about the educational aspect of the park, she would want the ride to be built. The ride would increase attendance, meaning more people would go to the park and learn about the other attractions.
waaa, waaa ,waaa ,cry me a river. Or better yet, a ocean so I can put Atlantis in it!!!
