Jazzland SLC coming for 2002, following slow year (updated)

Posted | Contributed by Crazydave87

Following a disappointing year in attendance, Jazzland will install a Vekoma suspended looping coaster for the 2002 season.

Update: Additional information about the effect on Jazzland's new SLC can be found at The Times-Picayune.

I hope this ride helps them out business wise.
Why doesn't Vekoma add the new wheel assembly (On X-Flight, Batwing) design to their other coasters?
It's hard to describe how the the assembly works, but it keeps all the wheels on the track (With the exception of the small space between the upstop, road wheel and the rail) at the same time. I realize this could possibly legenthen the train, but for the love of God Vekoma, people who get off your SLC's look like they've been in a wrestling match with no ear guards or helmets!

2Hostyl:   Thanks for the corrections.  I agree that the wheel gaps are also partly to blame...thanks for mentioning those.

Matthew

Zero-G: Actually, Bat-Flight suffers from the same wheel gaps as the SLCs. You can quite clearly see the wheels free spinning as it enters the brake run. Even worse, you can feel the bouncing as you twist from your back to stomach. It's especially offensive in the barrel rolls.

Even the Vekoma junior suspendeds (Reptar, Sliver Streak) have these gaps. The only Vekoma coasters that I'm not *sure* have the gaps are the invertigoes. The cobra rolls are quite smooth which leads me to believe there are no (or at least minimal) gaps. But due to the design of the trains, I cant really see.

and mamoosh, you're more than welcome :)

2Hostyl:  These wheel gaps -- Arrow has them, too -- leads me to wonder if B&M also has a patent on their wheel assemblies as well, particularly the spring loading?
A SLC won't do much to boost attendence.

Rocketman:  I happen to think you're wrong.  It may not bring the enthusiast community out in droves but I'm betting it will be a hit to the average park-goer.
I don't understand why the general public likes SLCs. Do they not get hurt by them or something?
The GP wouldn't know of anything better.

Buzzo:  Of course they get banged around riding an SLC.  But you have to realize there is a big difference between a person who's hobby it is to ride roller coasters and a person who may go to a park once or twice a year.

Coasters are our hobby.  We know the difference between a CCI and a GCI.  We know the difference between the B&M trains on Kumba and the B&M trains on Apollo's Chariot.  We can tell the differnce between how Raven is running first thing in the morning and late at night.  We can see the difference between Arrow track and Vekoma track.  And we know by experience how an SLC might be.

A person who visits a park 1-2 times a year doesn't get those little details.  For the most part it's either steel or wood, or it loops or it doesn't.. They don't know there are a few dozen SLC in the US or that there are Batman clones at many of the Six Flags parks.

To that person, the casual park guest, a coaster that hangs you under the track and goes upside-down 5 times is a BIG deal!  The park will advertised and market the hell out of it and people will eat it up.  Well all except us who know better.

Mamoosh, I'm glad someone "gets it" around here.  Lots of us "enthusiasts" lose touch with the mainstay of the theme park business, the general public.

I sure hope Jazzland gets the shot in the arm that they need.  If Maga Zeph gets dimantled I think I would cry like a baby!  It's SUCH a great ride!

"X" marks the spot in 2001!

I remember when Hangman opened ay Opryland (I live about 4 hours away from it...untill it closed) and EVRYBODY around here talked about it since noboday had seen a coaster where the track was above you.

Now to understand Jazzland's descissions you must know that Jazzland Theme Park operates on a completely business standpoint. Jazzland is owned by the Multi-Billion Dollar conglomerate Alfa Alfa Holdings. Alfa Smartparks keeps their parks under an extremely tight budget, they must run like a fine oiled machine. Patrick Evans, public relations director of Jazzland, said on a radio show called "The Future of Jazzland" that "we are not getting a major coaster every year" and "we noticed the park was not very crowded around 8 PM-10 PM so we changed the hours from 10 AM- 8 PM." So from my understanding they must make money every way they can. It is confirmed Jazzland is building a waterpark in the future. This is a wise descission because it targets the entire general public, not just the rollercoaster enthusiasts and some general public. Another factor is Jazzland is a new park and has yet to get their "act" entirely together. I think a waterpark and a new rollercoaster is a wise descission, they might even surprise you in the future who knows!

RPMGuitar Posted : Does anyone else think its odd that Jazzland has a New Orleans theme?  That’s like building an Old World German themed park in Germany.  Or a New York themed park in YC.  Why go to the amusement park when the real thing is a few miles away?  I was in New Orleans when the park first opened and was tempted to go.  But with so many other attractions, going to an amusement was near the bottom the list.  I think this park would be more successful in just about any part of the country except ew Orleans.

So you would build the wizard of OZ themepark in Bejing China? I dont think it really matters on the theme of the park entirely. I guess it's also to show tourists a bit of all of Louisiana in a themepark. As long as ew Orleans can support Jazzland I think it's ok. *** This post was edited by Cameraman on 8/22/2001. ***

All the people that said MegaZeph is an awesome coaster are absolutly right. That is second best wooden coaster i've even been on to date. It used to be the first until I rode "The Villian" at Six Flags WoA. But it still packs an awesome thrill.

Now about the Velkoma SLC they're going to be putting in... I do think it will bring the park money because like Mammosh said, people "Down South" probably have never heard of an SLC before. They would think it's a wonder that you could actually have your feet hanging from the trains when we know, good and well, there are hundreds like that all over the world. So don't think it won't get Jazzland any money cause I bet you any amount it will. Plus, added to Jazzland's already popular CCI coaster, MegaZeph, it probably will earn them plenty of business.

Also (for all you people who thought B&M should have been their choice)remember the "slow year". Jazzland probably couldn't affort buying a high priced, $12 million B&M coaster anyway, let alone they need one. That is in a way, waisting money for the park unless this was some B&M coaster that could delibritly attract people from all over the country (i'm pretty sure the park doesn't right now, even if some aspects of the park are definitly worth going to; it probably attracts GP around the region though)

...there's just one thing, though, Jazzland should do. Lower their extremly high (inside the park) prices. Then they would be even better.

I agree that an SLC will be a great ride for the area. They are inexpensive and offer a lot of bang for the parks buck.
Cameraman,

I would build a wizard of OZ theme park in Bejing if I knew the OZ movie or books where popular in Bejing!

I just don't see how a New Orleans theme would appeal to tourists or locals.

Actually Jazzland's prices are moderate. You should see Visionland's prices! Twice as high as Jazzland.
