I have read from alot of enthusiasts web pages that their opinions are that some believe MF to be overrated. Just a drop then alot of speed. I too feel this way. But I am in the group of people who feel that the Beast is the closest thing to riding Amtrak too.
MF has a great first drop. The 182 foot third hill is great too. But the rest of the ride I feel is wasted on the low overbanked turns. Sure it is fast the whole way through and is consistent. But the train ride to Toronto from Detroit is the same.
I don't know if any of you have ever heard of the Surf Coaster built by Togo. It is located at a Japanese park that is a little island type park similar to Cedar Point. The coaster extendes 279 feet into the ocean. Look up Surf Coaster on rcdb.com and you will find a link to the parks web site. There you will find a picture of the ride.
My idea is that MF would of been a much better ride had it been given a run out over the bay like Surf Coaster. That great drop then streight up 250 ft to a huge camelback or fan turn or double down the possibilities would be endless.
Look at the layout of Superman ROS at SFNEng. This ride is not nearly as tall as MF yet I feel gives a much more quality ride. If it had MF's height I feel it would of won the "Best steel coaster award" hands down.
The millennium island I feel greatly restricted it's potential. It is still a great ride though.

Everyone has opinons about the ride. Some say it is and some say it isn't. I think the ride is not. To me its an amazing creation that is one of my favorites. Even if Superman New England had MF's height I'm sure someone would still feel it was overrated.

84 coasters and counting
It's really easy to call a ride ovverated when it's been open for nearly 3 seasons. I don't see how anyone can still be debating this.
When I first rode it I thought it was amazing and that all the people that said it was just one big drop were idiots. Since then I've ridden it a dozen or so times and I've become one who thinks it's just one big drop. But thats after many many rides. I don't think the ride is ovverated. The reason I've gotten bored with it is because I have been on about 100 new coasters since I first rode MF in June of 2000. People who havn't been to many other places will definitely praise MF and may give people who think it's one big hill the idea it's ovverated.
For those who do think it is ovverated, think back to your first ride on MF. I highly doubt you were saying, "Wow, that ride was boring, it could've been so much better."

to me, its way too overrated. I found absolutly nothing redemeamable to it. I didn't like the air time at all. I'm not sure exactly what it was about the air, but I found it neither intense nor floaty, yet somewhere in between that was just horrible.
the speed of this, or any other coaster, does absolutly nothing for me. I didn't pay money to go super fast. if I wanted to have bugs or rain hit me at 93 mph, I'd get on the highway and stick my head out the window. then I'd realize how painful it is and pull my head back in.
as for the layout, it was an absolutle waste of space. with the space needed for the ride and the space given for the ride, the best solution was to make it a twister because an out and back would be inconceivable. while it has some twisting features, it wasn't near enough.
the intensity? yeah, it was intense, but in a bad way. before MF, the only coaster I ever blacked-out on was Shockwave at SFGA. what does that tell you? by the way, I'm not a fan of Shockwave.
one final note: where was this ride? just as it was getting going, it pulled into the brakes. CP along with several fans of the ride are proud of the fact that the trains pull into the brakes at sixty miles per hour. to me, that's not something to gloat about. to me, that says that they wasted about thirty or fourty miles per hour worth of energy. with this in mind, it was then pointless for the first drop to be over 300 feet which, again, is a big selling point of the ride.
there are plenty more rides with more air and more intensity than MF and I'd rather ride for them then wait in the insanely long line that MF still has.

Yeeaaaa...I HATE MF too. It is SOOO boaring. It seems as if you are going 20 miles per hour. If I wanted to go 20 Miles per hour, then I'd just ride the train. The drop is WAY too small. It needs to be like 400 or 500 feet tall so it would be more fun. And those OVERBANKED TURNS. I mean, what's up wit dat? Is it an inversion or not? I mean, come on, make up your mind and either give us loops or no loops. And why does it even have to go onto that ISLAND? It's SOOOO small and pointless to go onto. And those STUPID magnetic brakes. It stops just WAY TOO SMOOTHLY for my tastes. I mean WHY, WHY, WHY? (in a Mr Horse voice) "Millineum Force eaa? Hmmmm...No sir-I didn't like it!"
And if you couldn't tell that the previous comments were dripping with sarcasim, than you need to reread it.
But seriously folks, I respect the opinions of yall who don't like the thing, but if MF were human, I'd marry it.
It's really hard for me to understand how someone couldn't at least like MF. It's just so likeable.

Ok................
I am an avid preacher of this: to all of those who don't like MF, ride in the front seat, and when you get off tell me you are not the least bit happy with your ride.
Or even better, do you feel morely outraged when you get off the force? For god sakes, when I ride any coaster, I am happy. If I am having a bad day, roller coasters cheer me up. Not once have I gotten off a roller coaster and I wasn't happy, well, there is just one exception, Flashback.

After you've ridden Millie in the front you'll know why she's ranked #1 in the world. At first I did thought it was overrated but then I took a front seat ride and found out why she is #1.
PS I found that Mamba at WOF is too underated come on Steel Force is in the top 10 and Mamba is tied for 24th. Mamba can give great rides and good days.

Some people don't like it cause they're not fans of speed rides. That's fine.
Some people don't like it cause it's #1 and they just don't want to conform -- I can at least understand where they're coming from.
I don't think it's the best ride in the park, or the best ride in the world. But I will admit that it's got it's good points and on it's own is a great ride. Sure beats sticking my head out a moving car window! :)
As for extending it into the lake -- there's many reasons why this wouldn't work. First, Lake Erie ices up in the winter. True, not *all* of the lake becomes a huge chunk of ice, but near the shores, it's big floating blocks bumping up against the shore for a few months. This could potentially weaken supports (and their anchoring pilings) over time. That could lead to the whole coaster collapsing, which may or may not be fatal, depending on the time of the year.
Second, Lake Erie is part of a very highly trafficked shipping lane. There's also a lot of recreational traffic in those waters (hell, CP even has a *marina*). What happens when some amatuer speedboat captain loses control and slams into a track support at 45 MPH?
It might not happen often, and it may never happen, but the point is this -- the chances of a boat (or ice) hitting a support are a lot greater in water than on land.
PT300 said "Can't we just have fun anymore?". No, we can't. It seems that no matter what the magicians at Intamin, B&M, or defunct CCI provide(d), some people still have to debate (see admendment #5), which outrages me to no end and brings me to my next point that Cobraroller touched on when he said, "do you feel morely outraged when you get off the force? For god sakes, when I ride any coaster, I am happy. If I am having a bad day, roller coasters cheer me up."
And that, my friends is what it's all about. A coaching comrade of mine, who loves coasters and is 58, by the way, rode MF for the first time this summer. He has ridden many, including everything Texas, Florida and California have to offer. His words: "It was the greatest thing I've ever ridden, I felt like I was going to tumble out of the seat on the first drop and the whole ride was a blur." Now, his opinion may not mean squat, but think about this: We, being the enthusiasts, make up the thousands......He, being the general population, make up the millions. When I'm next to the unloading dock in line, I thoroughly enjoy seeing the 36 faces racing into the brakes smiling, gasping, & wiping tears from their eyes. I don't think they sigh, thinking, "Man, is this ride overrated?" I think they just had a 65 second rush.
Fun? More like, how serious can people want to make our fun...

There's nothing like a woodie...
It's not my favorite coaster, nor my favorite steel and it doesn't have my favorite drop. It might have my third or fourth favorite....and actually that would be the hop before the final overbanked turn.
But it sure is one astounding ride.

I'd just like to add one small thing. I know it may have sounded like I hated MF, but I didn't. I'm not sure I hate any ride, but I definatly thought it could be better. I had fun (except for the blacking out thing) and that's all that matters. yes, I still believe that its overrated. yes, I have respect for those who believe it to be number one. however, that doesn't negate the fact that MF just didn't strike a cord with me.
CobraRoller: when I drive on a highway, I can pass up milemarkers every few seconds or so. that doesn't make a journey fun for me, though. what makes a journed fun for me is what happens along the way, not how fast I'm going.
as for adding a MCBR, well I realize that Intamin likes to keep their coasters MCBR free, but I think that Superman: Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England made a better use of the land and energy that it was givin while MF did the basics and stopped short.
I'm not going to appoligize for my feelings and I don't expect anyone else to appoligize for their feelings, but my opinion is what it is. when I got off, I thought, "That was fun, but it could have been better." and I feel its a shame that some really great coasters get overlooked year after year because MF is now mythical.
