Inverted's and straight drops.

off the subj...i personally think straight drops on steel are alot better than curved

Airtime...some inverts feature a bit of float (see: Fire Dragon, Montu, even GB has a *little*)

You mean to say that Fire Dragon and Montu (wow, would've never guessed) give better airtime than Great Bear? Wow. I would've put Talon right behind Great Bear, but apparently, I need to make another trip to Florida and pay attention better.

I think the reason most inverts have curved drop is to keep the coasters as compact as possible. To me, what makes inverts so great is how twisted and disorienting they are. A curved drop not only keeps the coaster more compact but it adds to the twisting nature.

I really doubt the compression of the space between the cars has anything to do with this decision. All they would need to do is make sure the curve from the flat to the drop isn't too tight.

Ok people are asking me why I would want straight drops. I never said squat about me wanting a straight drop, I just thought that what was once, in the post a while ago, considered impossible is no longer impossible, because if I'm not mistaken Jubilee Odyssey is the first complete circuit inverted coaster with a straight drop.

While it is true that most of the drop is straight, it cannot be indisputably classified as a completely straight drop due to the turn. The turn is not before the drop, but rather a part of the beginning of the drop, and the turn is "unbanking" throughout much of the drop.

Take a look here to see the unbanking.

Deja Vu...period. If that completely and unarguably vertical drop does not answer your question nothing will.

Did you even read the rest of the thread Mike E? Astrosgp already explained it here:

The thing is that Deja Vu's track always curves "upwards" relative to the direction of movement, which means that the cars are never pushed closer together. It's very easy to kick the seat in front of you (in the A rows) as it is.

As for the bunny hop on DD, look at this picture here. The radius at the top is very wide for a hop of that size. So, yes, a straight drop could be accomplished but the curve into the drop would be quite large.

Would the design of the Intamin inverts help with this problem?

And what about the pre-drops on the B&M's - they're straight!

Somewhat off the topic of straight drops, but one of the MAJOR problems I see with Vekoma inverts is how close the cars are together. It makes me very uncomfortable that I can't put my legs up. It even has warnings on Deja Vu's to keep your legs down when in the "front" seats of the four across feature. Because of that reason I have yet to ride in those two seats in the back and in the front I've ridden twice, both on wing seats so I couldn't tell you which is better. I understand the curvature (SP?) having to be large which is probably why it has not been done to a full extent yet. Thankyou xtraxtreme for the picture, I guess it isn't as straight as I've seen in No Limits recreations.

I agree with you, SFGAMDie Hard, the Deja Vu leg smasher effect is kinda scary. Seriously, you could be going around the loop when the cars are spread out... and accidentally extend your legs and forget about the warnings. Then the cars come back together for the straight track and you're left with a broken leg or two. I'm surprised Vekoma actually went for this (in my opinion dangerous) design. I have a feeling someone is gonna get their legs hurt one of these days on a Deja Vu. But... if you watch it go around the loop, most people's legs are tucked tightly under the seats...so they must actually be reading the warnings. I especially like the pic on the back of the cars that shows the rider extending his leg and getting it broken/smashed/whatever between the cars. Always makes me chuckle. Ok, I've talked too much...
