Intamin proves itself yet again

Looks like Xcelerator isn't be the only Intamin coaster going under the knife right now:

Seriously, does the number of Intamin rides having to be modified in the past year or so disturb anyone else?

What in the world? What do those tiny fins do?

I dont no how those little fins could offer more support, they look like a kid threw them on.

The fins stregthen the weld joints. Nothing to worry about, I just don't know why they didn't do it in the first place. You may recall that some Xcelerator pieces were modified as such before the ride was even finished.

Jeff is partially right. It is to increase the capacity of force transfer from the smaller diameter to the larger diameter pipe. The fins transfer some of the axial load from the top pipe into the lower, thereby reducing the bearing stresses and decreasing the demand on the weld between the two pipes.

If it were only a weld strength issue, and not a bearing one, odds are they would just hire a welder to make a few more passes between the two pipes rather than spend the extra money fabricating and welding all of the fins.

What I don't understand is why Intamin keeps having to fix weak areas of track on many of their coasters. Shouldn't tests be done on stress of the track before it is built? And if they are testing why do they have to keep fixing their track, shouldn't they be able to calculate how strong the track and supports need to be before they construct a ride?
I won't be worried until one falls over. I doubt that will ever happen.

It should disturb you if the rides AREN'T modified. It should comfort you that the rides are being fixed. :)

Everyone seems to forget that a large portion of Raptor's cobra roll had to be replaced. It's not just an Intamin thing.

It's just a standard thign that happens, cars get recalled, coasters get reinforced etc etc

Dat true, Brent. Here's another example: Viper @ SFMM had its high-speed turn [between first and second loops] reinforced after the first season.

Heck, all three Arrow "mega loopers" had their vertical loops replaced. I love what SFGAd did with theirs :)

Bottom line, every ride needs maintained! Big deal! :)

They did? Even Viper? No way. I had no idea. What did they do? Are those little cross support things in the first vertical loop the change they did? Was the first loop the only ones they replaced or were all three replaced? Do I have any more questions? Find out later. ;)

GM, Ford and Chrysler, heck all of the auto manufactures spend billions designing and testing new cars before they go into production and they still have all kinds of recalls after the cars are sold.

Coaster manufactures can't build and test hundreds of prototypes before they produce the actual product. I think that they are doing pretty good.

Just waiting for May 4, 2003. :)

Yeah, the intricate crosswork on the top of the loops are new on all of them. I have pictures where it was just "normal" Arrow track.

edit: I just looked and I have pics with the old loops, and pics from 97 with the new ones (on Viper) So, it had to be before then....
