Innovative or traditional Coasters?

What do es everyone prefer. Innovative or traditional coaster. Innovative as in coasters like X, X-Flight and launched coasters or regular coaster with chainlifts and regular drops.

Here is my take, They build a looper, a flyer, a X ect and you go to the park to ride them, Surprise! The traditional wooden coasters are the best rides in the park even though the new ride offers a thrill that is different or possibly unique, They tend to wear on me and become the same old, same old.

Now the woodies always seem to be new to me even though I may have ridden them 1000 times.

Chuck, who says SFWOA has a nice selection of coasters but would put two of the three woodies as the best rides there.

I have no tendency towards one or the other. I mean take a look at my top fives.

Wood: The Legend, Lightning Racer, Son of Beast, Viper, Raven

Steel: Raging Bull, S:ROS@SFA, Montu, Phantom's Revenge, Mr. Freeze

One could argue that Lightning Racer, Son of Beast, Montu and Mr. Freeze are all "innovative" coaster not "traditional". A good ride is a good ride period!

Couldn't agree more. If you told me I could only have one or the other, I'd choose traditional of course. But the great thing is, I DON'T have to choose between them, I have both.

As for the arguement that innovative coaster break down more often, it doesn't really hold water cause guess what? When Xcellerator is down there is still Ghostrider, and when Ghostrider isn't running well(wooden is tempermental), I KNOW Xcelerator will deliver every time. That's the advantage of having BOTH.

The way the question is posed I'm going with traditional coasters. I much prefer the slower lift hill to the launch or elevator lift because it gives you that anticipation and build-up time. But, that being said, my two favorite types of coasters are stand-up and floorless, both of which I would consider innovative. Give me a looper or standard woodie any day over the new stuff that's out like flying coasters and X's and such. Different ideas come and go, but I think it says a lot that even with all the new stuff most parks are still opting for the woodies and steel loopers.

I like good coasters. Phoenix is one of my favorites at nearly 50 years old. I also love several launched coasters and the new generation of steel hypers.
I agree. There is NO way I would give up Millennium Force or X in favor of Shivering Timbers. I like my speed and height, as well as my wood. ;)

I like them all. Innovative and traditional. I like Mr. Freeze (innovative) and Viper (traditional). I like X-Flight (innovative) and Legend (traditional).

It doesn't matter to me. As long as they're good and fun.

I admit I have a soft spot for classic, traditional wood coasters. Question is, should I have that soft spot examined? LOL!

Me too, Mamoosh. While I do really dig several steel coasters (X, PR, Mr. Freeze), I just prefer the wooden ones. It's all a matter of taste.

Living in Southern California, I am VERY happy to have X, Deja Vu and Xcelerator so near to me. However, the delays on all of these was almost too much to bear! Deja vu and Xcelerator seem to be for the most part OK now, but X is (as I type this) closed still. For any new SoCal installs, I'd prefer a traditional, well proven design. These prototypes may be cool, but I'm ready for something that will work well from the opening date.

Nothing... NOTHING... can prepare you for... the Fourth Dimension!

You've gotta love the old wood. Just the history alone is enough to make me appreciate The Cyclone or Leap the Dips. The "new" wood - Raven, Cornball, etc. - will always hold a special place for me as well.

But when it all comes down to it, I'll take the big steel. Anyday, anytime. Magnum is what rekindled my love for roller coasters, and the rest of the 200'+ are nothing but improved (for the most part) versions of the original.
