Ineed some help...I'm writing a paper about park..

Hey everyone I need some help. I'm writing a research paper on how even though amusement parks have accidents, they are still great, safe forms of family entertainment. Now I need some help, I know I need to get information on accident records, laws and regulations, park history (I'm going to focus on cedarfair parks I think), guest attendance vs. accidents, and stuff. I was wondering if any one here knows of any good sites I could visit, or searching sites that would have this info. I'm asking here b/c I don't want to do general searches b/c I don't know how credible that information is. Any help, or suggestions anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a pretty good site for reports. They've got some archived info as well:

That site that CPLady stated is an excellant site for finding out about all of the amusement ride accidents in at least the past 10 years. I was going to say that one but she said it first. Another good site is http://www.saferparks.org/index.html

It talks about amusement rideregulation and why parks in florida don't have to report ride accidents because of loopholes and regulations on amusement parks and such. It should help you out also. Good luck.

Read the editorial written by Jim Fisher. It is called "CPSC: Lying With Statistics" or something like that. It is on the Coasterbuzz homepage or you could click editorial at the top and it would be in there. It was a great article and it talks about your topic.

Bull rides: 103
Batman rides: 61
Both of the sites mentioned above are pretty good sources especially rides911.  You might also want to look at some of the CPSC information on the number on injuries and deaths due to other things to put ride accidents in perspective.  Some examples of things to check out would be televisions, beds, and garden hoses.

If you run into Congressman Ed Markey's site use it only as an example of gross distortions of safety information.

I did a paper on that last year. I used saferparks.org some, but almost all my sources were print sources downloaded from the Electric Library or EBSCO databases. I analyzed several accidents (using accounts from the news) and the reasons for them.

It's not too hard to find attendance figures.  Parks don't usually give out injury figures, but in some states they are a matter of public record if the injury is serious.  The law varies from state to state with regards to rides.  As far as I know thaere are no reporting requirements for injuries that are not ride realated, such as falls while walking.

This link is an article that gives the estimated nuimber of injuries nationally for many types of consumer products. http://www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PUBS/cpsr_nws18.pdf

Azzkikir--when is your paper due?  I will be able to send you an article tonight (as a word attachment) which I believe will help you tremendously.  The article is entitled "A Thrilling Proposal:  Federal Regulation of America's Modern Day Scream Machines."  It goes through the history of federal regulation of amusment rides under the Consumer Product Safety Act and looks at how states currently regulate the amusement industry.  I can send you this along with a couple of handy internet sites if you want.  Just let me know!

I think it is very important that you make a distinction between RIDER accident and WORKER accidents. MANY of the listed accidents are workers who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, not park patrons. Furthermore, the actuall accidents that are due to mechanical failure are far more rare. A person who slips from a platform and gets hit by a passing train or a kid who slips out from a restraint is far different than 2 trains colliding or an Enterprise car detatching from the ride and being thrown across the parking lot.

Brandino I would love your help, my addy is azzkikr10101@yahoo.com. My paper isn't due for a couple of weeks but I have to have all my reasearch. Oh and btw sorry for n e speling mistakes...I hate spelling!

So does any one have any other suggestions? I was doing a lot of research today but I find lots on the negitive side :-(

As the saying goes "good news is no news".  What you need to look at is that actual comparisons of risk.  Only one customer has been killed in a ride accident at an amusement park this year out of roughly 300 million attendance.  You are about 20 times as likely to be killed in the automobile ride to the park as you are to be killed in a ride accident.  The death per passenger mile for a roller coaster is 1/3 less than that for a passenger car.  Plus almost no one ever rides coasters 100 miles in one day.
Azzkikir101--I just sent you the paper as promised with a couple of websites to check out.  I am always happy to help out a fellow enthusiast.  Any more questions, fire away!  If I do not know the answer to them (and I probably do not as my knowledge is limited of course), I am sure somebody on the board here can help you out.

I actually delivered a persuasive speech against federal fixed amusement site regulation several weeks ago.  I utilized newspaper articles from EBSCO and ProQuest, and the CPSC website proved to be incredibly helpful.  Just an idea...
