Iger says Disney layoffs start this week

Posted | Contributed by BrettV

Disney will begin layoffs this week, the first of three rounds before the beginning of the summer that result in about 7,000 job cuts, according to a memo sent by Chief Executive Bob Iger. The cuts are part of a broader effort to reduce corporate spending and boost free cash flow. Disney said last month it plans to cut $5.5 billion in costs, including $3 billion in content spend.

There are a lot of great standalone movies. But no one seems to watch them and they don't make a lot of money.

The episodic TV format is cool because it does give you more room for exposition and character development, which I think makes you more invested when the action starts up. Some folks don't seem patient enough for this format, however.

I love episodic series for those reasons. There have been some series, however, that have had so much filler they should have either been several episodes shorter or a 2 hour movie (not necessarily speaking of Marvel stuff exclusively).

I re-watched WandaVision recently, and was brought to tears again. It's pretty rare that something can do that on second viewing. I also just finished re-watching Loki and it was also great, mostly (but not entirely) for different reasons. The emotional tenor/quality of both of those was a fair bit above nearly any of the films for me (excepting Endgame). The films generally just don't have enough time to fit in a good character arc among the explosions; Endgame worked because it was a many-year arc for at least a couple of the characters.

Guess I'm living the Gucci lifestyle when I watch Andor while eating a burrito. ;)

Jeff makes a good point. I was about to ditch Disney+, but it is fairly cheap. But with Netflix, Prime, HBO, and now Paramount+ to catch the Aztecs in the final four, and hopefully the final, something will have to give at some point, and it won't be burritos. ;)

I do the Disney/Hulu bundle, get Amazon by default because Prime, and intermittently get Apple, though mostly when I somehow end up with an Apple gift card or credit. Once I get through Ted Lasso and Shrinking, oh, and Schmigadoon, I'll likely drop it again. Of course, then The Morning Show will be back. We'll see.

I definitely like how easy it is to cancel and restart these streaming services.

I’ve stopped and restarted, Hulu, Disney +, Netflix, Peacock and Amazon a few times with no issues.

Ike Perlmutter got canned.

Mr. Perlmutter’s involvement with Marvel as a whole has greatly diminished over the years. He has not been involved with Marvel movies since 2015, when a feud with Mr. Feige over costs related to “Doctor Strange” boiled over. (Mr. Perlmutter wanted to fire Mr. Feige; Mr. Iger overruled him.) Mr. Perlmutter lost oversight of Marvel television shows in 2019.

I can't imagine Marvel Studios without Feige. What he's done is remarkable.

That was probably overdue. I don't know what his contract was, but they should have dropped him as soon as possible after the acquisition.

There isn't anything compelling me to tune in to Disney+. I'm not that interested in rewatching the Marvel movies. I enjoyed WandaVision and Loki but haven't been drawn in to any of the more recent shows. I haven't seen an episode of Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, or She-Hulk. I will probably check out Mandalorian when this season wraps. Give me some more Imagineering content and I'm all in.

That's my only disappointment... they bootstrapped the service with a lot of relatively inexpensive but solid content that they haven't kept up on. The Jeff Goldblum show is fantastic. They never did a second season of Encore! hosted by Kristen Bell (Veronica ****ing Mars!). The park BTS stuff has been completely neglected. The Imagineering series was admittedly a historical doc, but what next? They finally aired the making of the Disney Wish, which was originally on cable NatGeo, but even that was classified with the disclaimer of being a promotional show. Fortunately, they've been very consistent with BTS specials on the various shows.

Occasionally I’ll watch an old Kurt Russel or Dean Jones flick. Or maybe something like Gus. But a lot of that stuff is really dated.

If it was mentioned I missed it, but Bad Batch has been excellent Star Wars storytelling. I had pretty low expectations for this series, but was hooked from the pilot. Overall I have enjoyed each new series they have put out (to varying degrees), and I don't mind the "filler" episodes. This second season is right on par with the first.

All of the animated series from Dave Filoni, even pre-Disney+, has been great. It's just been too much to catch up on, so I've only seen parts of it.

I saw Iger in the park yesterday. My first thought was “How nice of him to come lay us off in person.”

I will give Disney credit for one thing - They are sticking it back to Ron DeSatan and for that they have my blessings!!
