IAAPA 2006: Shapiro tells industry to stop thinking it's "mature"

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Six Flags Chief Executive Officer Mark Shapiro says that he needs to find more products to fill a niche and make money at the same time. It's just one of the ways Shapiro urged an estimated crowd of 22,000 at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions' annual show to stop thinking about the industry as "mature" and redefine the ways it entertains.

I listened to Mr.Shapiro's adress and was unfortunately underwhelmed . It was clear it was a rehash of earlier speeches going back to ESPN days . Its the standard diatribe about societal trends that the entertainment glitterati are supposed to impress us, the great unwashed with . Nothing new beyond Mr. Shapiro's pissing off the 12 percent of the membership from the zoo industry ( it's clear he didn't know his audience ).The audience responded with minimal applause which signified there was a general lack of appreciation for the commentary from a so far unproven fellow CEO (although the after talk was quite critical of scores of mistakes the young man seems to be racking up to date.) . I wouldn't say he shot his foot off but certainly did himself no favors either . He can't compensate with fast talk and rather vapid and unclear articulation of a solid plan for Six Flags.
I don't if this was mentioned in the numerous comments on this page, but it is most certainly necessary for everyone to know.Mark Shapiro got received a tremendous raise, but...DID YOU KNOW THAT...

1. Mark Shapiro froze the pensions of Six Flags Employees?
2. Mark Shapiro froze the wages of Six Flags Employees?
3. Mark Shapiro preached of EVERYONE needing to make sacrifices for the good of the company?
4. Mark Shapiro made a deal with Home Depot that requires Six Flags to make every purchase possible with Home Depot, at 150% the normal price?

It's apparent that Shapiro is a hypocrite as EVERYONE doesn't include him. The employees are suffering from significant increases in the cost living while he accepts a tremendous raise. It's the holiday season and the employees still haven't seen a sign of relief. If nothing else, Six Flags should be boycotted until Shapiro starts doing the RIGHT THINGS.http://digg.com/business_finance/Six_Flags_CEO_to_get_raise_despite_company_s_troubles
