I can't get my RCT2 to work

john peck's avatar
After two installing attempts, it wont work.

I will go to play it, I get a hourglass for a second but then it does nothing.

Now heres where I differ from many of you. Im using a Mac 500 Mhz. G4 with Virtual PC (Wind. 98). My last 3 RCT games worked fine.

Any possible clues to why mine won't play?
Im also off to see the support section on the Website, but I was wondering first for any of your imput.

Maybe they made made different so it may not work on virtual pc

Make sure you reboot your machine before you attempt to play. If you try after installing without rebooting, it will do exactly what your saying it's doing.

i have had problems with my game also. . .what i have found works is that i go into directx and take off directx sound emulation. the sound still will work in the game. then the only way the game works is if i take out the cd and put it back in. the icons and shortcuts for my game dont seem to work. well if that helps in any way. Good Luck

Are all your drivers up to date?

Does Virtual PC support DirectX 8.1? This is required for most new games.

I have Virtual PC (Windows XP version) and have this problem as well. I emailed the company who makes the software and this is what I recieved:

"Unfortunately Virtual PC is not designed for games. Virtual PC emulates 4 MB
of video memory as that amount is enough to display most resolutions.
Virtual PC does not support hardware 3D acceleration and therefor doesn't
have more video memory for your textures and geometry required for 3D games.
We do offer a refund if you purchased Virtual PC on the last 30 days."

I don't know about your version of Virtual PC since it's a Windows 98 version, but I hope this helps.

Wow... only supports 4MB of video memory? That's unfortunate. I can understand the no 3D support, as the wrapping between VPC and the hardware would likely make it useless, but that's a shame.

Dammit! That really blows!

I got a response from the website saying "we haven't tested the game on virtual PC Yet"

Could just be the laziness of the tech.

Heres my NEW problem. I went to Uninstall my game again, but stopped it midway through because something caught my attention (which I don't remember now) Anyways.... I went to go back to choose "uninstall" and the option was gone. When i go to open the game, it says something alog the lines of "there was an error with the disc"

You're not serious are you? I doubt very much that any QA ever places a priority in testing a game on a PC emulator. VPC can barely run Word effectively, there's no way I'd expect it to run a complex game like RCT.

Im totally serious. RCT runs beautifully and fast on my Mac G4 w/ VPC. My roommate has a G3 w/ VPC and it ran well on that, ARROW GUY, my other roomie, has a New Imac with VPC and it runs great as well.

Heres what the company wrote to me:

"Unfortunately, this game has not been tested upon Virtual PC.  As such, we
cannot provide support for this game as essentially, you do not meet system
requirements."

More to come later as I continue tearing out my hair.....

Ugh... that sucks. In Pittsburgh, we have Goodwill Computer stores where people donate their old PC's and the proceeds from the resale go to charity. You can get them pretty cheap from what I've heard. Of course, you'd still essentially be paying a few hundred just to play the game. Probably not worth it.

And just when I thought I'd like to switch they keep PULLING ME BACK IN!

I'd switch in a heartbeat, but you know, being a Microsoft developer kind of makes it a little hard when the tools only run on Windows!

When Ol' Bill was developing Windows 95 he basically said "Make it look like Mac" so they put the menu bar at the bottom and called the trash can "recycle bin"

They are all bastards
