Is the drop on Dondonpa vertical?
Yes, for a brief distance.
So Hypersonic is getting the magnetic braking system they have on Dodonpa? GOOD!

PKD has cornered the market on "headbanger" coasters. I won't even ride Anaconda, Grizzly, Hurler, or Flight of Fear anymore. Just one ride on Hypersonic was enough for me (and I'm not one to shy away from the rough ones). The only *great* coaster in the park is Volcano.
.....ophthodoc now putting his shields up.....red alert.......

Anyway, on target, I'm not sure why H:XLC didnt come with magnetic brakes in the first place. That's a modification I would welcome 'With Arms Wide Open'. I'm still wondering about buying that pass though. I really only planned on making good use of it during the first few weeks of the season when SFA was still closed.

opthodoc: How do you bang your head on Grizzly, Hurler, or FOF since the mods? When Grizzly is running fast it is an excellent woodie, though sometimes it is a slug. FOF is fun now that the pain (OTSR) has been removed.
I thought that the ejector air at the top of Hypersonic was fantastic, not painful. I did notice that it was too much for the woman next to me however, who was is hysterics after the ride.
Timing depends on a lot of things. The problems probably weren't identified until the ride had been in service for some time. It then takes time to determine what the redesign objectives are, do the engineering, obtain material, fabricate it, and then install it. And of course the engineers and the shop probably already have other projects that they are working on and can't drop instantly.
With regards to safety factors. Engineers may design to a 4:1 safety factor as a calculational number , but we don't really expect that the end product is 4 times as strong as it needs to be. If we really thought that we would lower the safety factor, and for some types of structure such a airplanes, much lower safety factors are common.
A 4:1 safety factor (or 3:1 or whatever) is used to compensate for numerous things such as:
Loads that may be higher than expected or that occur in unexpected combinations.
Fatigue effects.
Out right abuse of the equipment.
Accumulation of stresses in small regions of the structure that our calcs don't fully cover.
Flaws in fabrication.
Flaws in the material used.
Accumulated dimensional errors.

Opthodoc, in case you didn't know, FOF doesn't have OTSR's anymore.

The word "definitely" is definitely the most misspelled word on the buzz.
Was anyone at Knott's Winter Coaster Solcase? I'm just curious to know exactly what question was asked and what Mr. Checketts exact words were. Did he actually say they were redoing Hypersonic's tower, or was he mentioning that Dodonpa's hill was redesigned?
What he said exactly was that it wasn't an issue of rider complaints but one of the trains not holding up due to the G forces. He said the park wanted changes made so that the trains last longer.

oph: Well FoF is awesome (now...), Anaconda has its days, Grizzly is cool, But you're right on with Hurler *ducks slap from GregLeg*
Nah, just one less person between me and the ejector seat. :) To be fair, Hurler DOES seem to be a temperamental ride. I've gotten AMAZING airtime out of it, but also rides that could charitably be described as lackluster. I'll admit I wouldn't put it in the same league as Raven, Legend, or Phoenix, for instance.
Nothing compares to the airtime pop on Hypersonic, though.

P.S. What's with the baggage comment? Something on your mind G?
Prehaps good old Stan should stick to throwing babies up in the air and catching them. Maybe he should of went to school and studied engineering! Stan took great pleasure in making fun of poor old Ron Toomer -
"he doesn't even ride his own coasters".
Can you tell I am not a big fan of S&S?

HyperSonic XLC will not open with the rest of the
Park this season. As many of you know from first-hand experience, the ride
has not been reliable and has experienced a high amount of downtime since we
opened it. We realize that it is very disappointing to come to the park
expecting to ride and then learning the ride is down. This winter we have
been working diligently with S&S to correct these issues, but we have not
yet finished the work. We have made the decision to keep the attraction
closed until we can operate it consistently and reliably. We have not yet
determined the extent of the modifications that will be needed. HyperSonic
will re-open when we are satisfied with the attraction's level of
reliability.
