Hurricane Charley and Florida Parks

I'm supposed to go to Flordia on thrusday. Is that not a good idea since the power is out? Will Islands of Adventure be open?

IOA opened on schedule yesterday. Call your airline to check on your flights. Tourist areas were some of the first to get power restored.

Thanks CPJ,

We're driving so we don't have to worry about plane tickets. My parents are worried about gas stations having power and if we would be driving around the destruction.

I would think that the most vulnerable area of any of the parks would be a couple of buildings in Seuss Landing at IOA. I remember seeing a show a while back showing how some of those buildings were made out of styrofoam.
Tourists can be some of the stupidest people during a natural disaster. While working at MGM about 10 years ago, there was a tropical storm that passed through Orlando. While not a strong storm, the parks were closed in the morning and scheduled to open later.

When I got to work around noon, there were reports of people waiting outside the gates at 8:00AM, in the middle of the storm. On top of that, they were mad that the park wasn't open. C'mon people - it's raining sideways and will be for a couple hours - go back to bed.

I saw that same thing about the castle as well. They said that from the looks of it, you wouldn't know, but the entire castle is designed to stand up to hurricane force winds. It would be cool to see it dismantled, though. That would rock. Its like the Enterprise off star trek coming apart incase of battle.:)
The Orlando parks were on the "clean" side of the storm. Had the hurricane gone through Tampa as it was originally projected, the parks would have had a more significant beating.

There is a water park in Cape Coral, FL which is just south of where the eye made landfall. I have not heard how that park weathered the storm. What you are not seeing on tv now is just as shocking...or more so than what you are seeing.

My mother had to go up to Arcadia, FL to help out with a home for the mentally ill. She was told to bring flashlights, food, water, etc because it could be days or even weeks until essentials are restored.

We experienced a windy day Friday here in Ft. Lauderdale but we were lucky.
