Hurricane @ Myrtle Beach Pavilion...

This CCI (the only one I have on my track record...) seems to not get any attention. I've never ridden Legend or Raven, though I've heard they're great, as well as LoCoSuMo, but I got my first ride on HC5 this past Oct. while at Myrtle on vacation(and scouting out jobs, since I'm gonna be moving down there this year.). I only got one ride, since It was down for most of the day (had planned on an all day ride pass for this and my first Wild Mouse, Mad mouse, cause it was a slow day with no lines on anything), and it was the last weekend of the season.

I really liked it, as did my brother and sister(who got me in2 coasters in the first place), but no one seems to talk bout it that much. I for one will be happy to have the Pavilion and the Family Kingdom as my home parks after this year, with 2 good Woodies(my fav. type of coaster).

Now if I can just get to MB Gran Prix to get a first go on a Mack Spinning Wild Mouse....

Thanks for reading my rants and raves, reply if you want.

The Pavillion is technically my homepark, it's closer than Carowinds anyways. The Hurricane is a pretty good ride, but it suffers from poor maintenance and the trains are fairly bad. If the ride was better maintained and had better trains, it would be a lot better. Now, with this news of the Pavillion moving, I hope the Hurricane isn't lost, it does look nice right near the ocean. I think a lot of people don't know the Hurricane is CCI, at least I didn't for a while.

My feeling is they won't lose the Hurricane. Now, if we can just get them to lose those Gerstlaur trains....

Brian, THIS is the CCI you can *host* for me. Until Cheetah, it was the closest to home, yet I've never been...sure, Gersties kinda bite, but I've heard good things about the ride. The setting *does* give the ride bonus points...now what's up with this moving thing. Can I get there before anything bad happens...

I enjoyed Hurricane thoroughly, and it got pretty crazy in the rain, but I hear the ride it gives can change dramatically from day to day. The *real* star of the Grand Strand for me was Swamp Fox. It was just delivering some awesome rides. That spinning mouse at Grand Prix aint' too bad either :)

Swamp Fox is an excelent ride.... it's really short but very peppy. Great Airtime, great location, great park!

Also of note, the "Desperado" @ family kingdom is a ton of fun.... probably the best interactive dark ride ever.... I definant "must ride" if your in the Myrtle Beach area.

I agree, the MB Hurrican is a wonderful ride, it just needs better trains. Feeling those trains shimmie in the helix rattles my nerves, and my neck, a little bit.

But, if you really want a great ride, you must ride Swamp Fox, an impossibly steep first drop, great airtime, wonderful trains, and a beautiful setting, and paint job.

Swamp Fox is definately my favorite of the two MB woodies. Hurricane was fun, but the G Trains and poor maintenance really did a number on it. Nothing to write home about. Now, if The Pavillion somehow learned how to take care of a wooden roller coaster, well, that'd be an entirely different story- it is a CCI we're talking about here after all...

Definitly LOVE the Swamp Fox, that is one of my fav. Woodies. What is this bout the Pavilion moving, Willh51? that's news to me, I'd like to know more bout that. I kinda doubt that will ever happen, though, it's been there for over half a century. Family Kingdom was closed during my last visit, didn't know a thing bout Desporado, gonna have 2 try that out.

But I would like to hear more bout this "Pavilion Moving" thing...

Have any of you Sawmp Fox fans ridden Starliner at Miracle Strip. It's an Allen seaside out-n-back, and it was wondering how they compare...ridewise, layout-wise, etc.

edit: rcdb says they were both born in the same year...'63. Pretty cool, seeing how many seaside coasters have been lost, that these two are still around...:)

From what I've heard locally, the Myrtle Beach Dowtown Redevelopment Corporation has asked the owners of the Pavilion to consider moving elsewhere on the Grand Strand. My guess is that they want to try and either class the Pavilion area up (starting with the removal of the park) or they feel that the land it sits on would be better suited for other development opportunities, such as more hotels. So far it sounds like they are just asking, for now. Does anyone know if this group has the legal right to make the Pavilion move? Any Beach locals heard any specifics? BTW, the Swamp Fox rocks in the back! Just my two cents.
it would be a VERY stupid idea for them to ask the Pavilion to move. their main objective is to bring back the people to down town, since most now go to Broadway @ the Beach or Barefoot Landing, and away from downtown. They are trying hard(and doing a good job) to revitalize the downtown area, but the Pavilion, Ripleys' attractions, and a few clubs are what brings people into the town. Besides, Key Attractions owns the property, from what I know, and so they can't be forced to move.

Again, this is pieced together using a couple of different sources, but my take on it is this...

Myrtle Beach has generally wanted the Pavillion to move for an awfully long time, but the city could not force it to happen and the Pavillion (MB Farms) wouldn't budge because they didn't want to OR have to. I think what's gotten the wheels turning is the fact that the city is now offering to PAY the Pavillion (park) to move and PAY for relocation. I think that's all it's gonna take. Now where they move, I can't be too sure.

Keep in mind when they closed the Air Force Base, there were BIG time rumors of a major park moving into town, but somehow the plan was nixed because the big wigs (many who own a stake in the Pavillion) had a vested interest in keeping the Pavillion the best show in town.

Over the years though, there have always been rumors of one or both parks, Pavillion and Family Kingdom, moving. Here's hoping any plans to do so involve taking the lumber along. ;)

Hurricane is an awesome coaster. It's a woodie that doesent end in two seconds. I go to Myrtle Beach every summer, and the Swamp Fox is next to my hotel, so I ride it like 3 times a night, every night. So I've probably put more miles on the Swamp Fox then any other coaster I've been on. But yeah, Hurricane is awesome. It's also where I kinda got my name from...lol.
well thanx for the relocation info. never knew bout that. I'd hate to see either park go anywhere, since they have always been around for me in their current spots. I think it would be a total waste and mistake to move them. It would be nice to have a new Theme park their, that was more like Paramount or Six Flags, but I'm happy with what there is. I'd have liked to see what would have happened to the park that Tussads(sp?) had a long time ago, had it had the room and better luck to flourish, but oh well. We could have had Nemesis in the states instead;).

Ha! It would funny if they ended up moving next to Broadway @ the Beach.

Yea, I miss Magic Harbur too. It had real potential, they just did not cash in on it.

Yes, if they do move, that would be a great place, Broadway is great! I didn't get to hit Magic Harbur, would have been cool to do at the time. I've always thought the Airforce Base would've been a great amusement park, didn't know it was going to be in consideration for one at one point. Thats cool. I think they should just doze all the motels in between FK and the Pavilion and make one HUGE park, but oh well;)...

I don't think the Pavilion should move. It's right in the middle of the action so I really see no tangible reason why it would move anyway.

My family used to go to Myrtle Beach every summer when I was a kid so I pretty much grew up riding Swamp Fox and the old Corkscrew & Galaxi. I was just looking at some updated photos of the Swamp Fox. Has it been repainted? I loved both the Family Kingdom and the Pavilion and I am glad to hear they are still doing well.

The Swamp Fox has always been a favorite of mine and I look forward to getting back down to MB as soon as I can to try out the Hurricane and the Wild Mouse at the Grand Prix that everyone talks about.

I am glad to hear more people talk about Magic Harbor. We used to stay at the Lakewood Campground next to the park and I always loved the large Ferris Wheel. Is it still there?

I really adored that little park. Too bad they had a ring of bad luck in the 90's. From what I remember the Black Witch was a cool little coaster.....maybe a little rough.

coasterqueen,

The lot that the Pavillion (park) resides is prime real estate to the city of Myrtle Beach. Sadly, it's become run-down from what it used to be. That area now has it's dregs and dark alleyways that the city loathes. It sees that land as a place that could be spruced up nicely since it is right smack in the middle of what MOST people call Myrtle Beach. The general consensus of folks who visit Myrtle Beach is that they like to STAY in North Myrtle Beach and come visit. Obviously, the city wants to stop that, and understandably so. They can relocate the park rather easily as well. The only sticklers and potential casualties would be Hurricane (not likely), the raft ride, and the old Haunted Hotel. The rest should be able to be moved.

Ugh, ;) I grew up in Myrtle Beach and was a little kid when Magic Harbor was open. That place ALWAYS gave me the creeps even before the accident with Black Witch. I even remember when the corkscrew was there. :)

Sadly, I'll never get a credit on the long lost woodie "These 50 States" that used to reside in North Myrtle Beach!! :(

What is the Air Force base still being used for? Would that still be the new location for the park if they move?
