how will cicadas affect PKI,HW,SFKK the next month?

But gas prices affect the cost of everything else from airline tickets to computers. Airlines add a surcharge whe gas gets too expensive and higher gas prices increase the cost of shipping therefore increasing the costs of goods and services. While gas price hasn't kept up with inflation I believed that stabilized gas prices during the eighties and nineties help kept inflation in check. Now watch inflation attack us with a vengence beacuse of the higher gas prices. And since Bush is pals with OPEC you know who to thank for higher gas prices! :-(

I haven't seen any sign of the cicadas yet. My cats are acting strange which they usually do right before a "storm".

If they are in Cinci by now they are probably about ready to appear here in Southern WV.

17 years ago, I was 11 years old and living on a farm halfway between Columbus and Cincinnati, and I don't remember any cicada attack. Hmph.

But I will say that canned asparagus is putrid. And all asparagus makes my pee stink. :)

My blog You said, "I'm gonna run you down." I heard, "I'm an orangutan."
LoL , Tina Classic :)
I wonder if there is anyway to use Ciccadas for fuel?

Chuck, who thinks we could genetically manuplate a brood to come out every year when fuel prices go up.

Mooshy you would agree wouldn't you? These youngsters couldn't handle *ancients* like us right?

Darn tootin'!

There have been 'shells' (cicadas' shed skin) all over the trees and ground in my yard, and I've seen a few full-grown specimens in the last week or so...but this morning it started...the mating call.

I could hear it from my room as I was getting dressed, but when I walked out the front door it was really loud. I can only imagine how loud it will be in a few days at its peak. Around here (northern VA) they're everywhere!

Well, everyone better cancel their trips this summer because of the cicada. With all that noise, you're likely to go crazy.

(insert loads of sarcasm here)

And their taste has been discussed in previous threads as well. A friend of mine (entomologist for the natural history museum) ate one...details here.

At their peak in a few days in northern VA? I don't think so Vater.

So far I have yet to hear...let alone see any of them & I'm in Manassas....where exactly in northern VA are you?

Now they do make a bee line for the trees when they emerge & we've got quite a few trees in yard & still nothing....it makes you wonder just how many might've fallen victim to the lawnmower yesterday when I had to cut the grass.

I hear there are cicadas at SFA...along with some mysterious new coaster track. Have you seen them, BATWING? ;)

mOOSH [sorry...couldn't resist teasin' ya]

BATWING FAN, I live in Fairfax. Granted, it's a pretty old neighborhood with a lot of trees, so maybe I've just spotted early risers. I was surprised that they'd been emerging so soon since I had heard the estimated projected date for their arrival was May 17th. I work at Fort Belvoir, and I have yet to see a single one here, so perhaps the peak won't be for a couple of weeks. But couldn't a couple of weeks still be considered 'a few days'? :)

Also, I think you'd know if any had fallen victim to your lawnmower. Our grass was cut on Monday, and there are quite a few cicada parts all over the lawn and driveway. Ewwww... ;) *** Edited 5/14/2004 5:46:23 PM UTC by Vater***

Are there cicadas in Indiana and, if so, how do they deal with the funky time zones? Do they emerge at different times?

mOOSH [this is your warning...I'm in a Friday mindset today]

I'm in the DC area too. Live in Southern Prince George's county, work in Rockville (yeah, I know, it's a truly nasty commute!)... I haven't seen one single cicada yet. I am really grateful to that. I figure since the development we moved into 4 years ago has been completely developed in the past 4.5 years, there shouldn't be many. Looking at all the ground that has been dug up in the past 17 years, I figure Germantown and all of Loudon county should be cicada-free zones ;)

Rentzy - one hour north of Albany would put you near some of my family in Corinth. I used to live in Ticonderoga.

Kitty

Ahh good old fairfax county...I used to live there from 82 to 96 & back in 87 during the last cicada invasion those suckers were all over the place...& no I havn't found any cicada guts in the backyard yet so I'm sure they must've survived the mower onslaught of yesterday afternoon.

Coaster kikky: you're living in southern PG county? man that must be an awful long commute all the way into Rockville each day...as we all know traffic on the beltway can be a real pain especially during rush hour but at least you're a hop skip & a jump from SFA.

Even with all the expansion going on in Loudon county I'm sure the cicadas are an ever present force to be reckoned with...at least this year they are.

But NO ONE goes there anymore....at least not until Supes is back up and running...;)

This post contains satire and satirical by-products...please ingest responsibly...:)

I wonder if we can make them into gas that will power our cars!

Thanks,

Look guys and gals, all yous is going about this the wrong way... all ANY park has to do to take care of the potential Cicada problem is invest in an S&S SWAT.

Better than the Mantis joke. Ouch ;)
Shouldn't this conversation be taken over to "Insect Buzz" (Sorry, couldn't resist)? I live in Baltimore County, about 15 minutes from Baltimore City, and we have two trees and several plants that are littered with shells. We've seen several adults, as well as a few body parts of bugs that were probably attacked by birds or something else. So far, no noise.

I do live sound, and we're doing graduation for John's Hopkin's University in Baltimore City all next week. Hopefully, they won't start making noise, or we'll have to bring double the amount of speakers!

I'm not old enough to remember the invasion of '87 (I was 2), but I'm kind of wary of these things... Since I go to UMD, I've been at College Park and I've seen a few squished ones on the pavement, but I haven't yet heard the infamous noise or seen a live one. My permanent home is in Baltimore County too, so I'm wondering how it is up at home when I move back in on Wednesday...

I was planning on going to PKD or Hershey in a few weeks and there's nothing I'd like less than smacking into a bug... but there are some things I'm willing to sacrifice for an adrenaline rush :D

GO TERPS! :]
