How do parks come up with the names for their coas

I wonder how Theme Parks come up with rollercoaster names because I have the hardest time thinking up some! I mean take Goliath for example, a name that almost everybody knows from David and Goliath but I would have never thought of that! Can u think of any good names? The only new one I've thought of is Threshold!
I think the way PKI got SOB was by poling guests. SOB was the one most chosen, so they went with it

all about PKI
the Beasts` Den
I got a good name...Unbridled Fear. whowhohahahaha!!!!!!!!!! But I think they look at some aspects of the ride and then decide which name is best. I mean you aren't gonna name a coaster Flip-Side if it doesn't go up side down, would you? It also all depends on what the park want. The surronding areas would have a big effect in it.

It's his turn to feast, when you ride the Son of Beast.
Montezuma's Revenge
One factor could be the public's familiarity with a name: either from a previous coaster (Beast/Son of Beast), or other sources (Goliath). For example, I find it very interesting that CP named their new inverted coaster in 1994 "Raptor" - when the incredibly popular movie Jurassic Park was released in 1993 and the most popular dinosaur in the movie was the 'Raptor. Granted, one is a dinosaur and one is a bird (and it's amazing how many guests don't know that), but I don't think CP would have considered the name if the term "raptor" wasn't as popular as it was right then.

I agree. They must have some pretty creative people working for them. Cedar Point and Six Flags Magic Mountain always seem to come up with the best names!

VisionLand held a contest to name Rampage. A 15 year old won.

Well at IOA for example when your doing a section themed to something its really easy. I mean Dr. Doom's Fear Fall, Amazing Adventures of Spiderman, Jurassic Park River Adventure, and Dueling Dragons, and Triceratops Encounter are really self explanatory towards the rides. As for Six Flags where they get names I have no idea. I mean how can you get a name like Batwing or Nitro for a coaster. I personally like CP's better though, names like Raptor, Mantis, Millennium Force, Mean Streak, Gemini, Power Tower and Magnum XL-200(Xtra Large 200ft, pure genious) are the most unique and coolest sounding names created.

"This time I think ... I think it's ... it's going to work!" - Dr.Bruce Banner
The most unique: XLR8 @ SFAW named in 1984!
how they came up with Mantis is beyond me.

how about a coater called mad cow??? it could be in a park in europe

Best Steel: MF @ Cedar Point
Best Woodie: The Beast @ PKI
Best Park: IOA!

I always thought Mantis was a particularly good name for a stand-up coaster -- if you think about the praying mantis insect, it's practically all legs.

And so is every other existing insect...

Yeah, it must of took some hard thinking to come up with "X" ;)
I like that, Mad Cow. or...
Raging Cow
Cow Force
Cow
Son of Cow
Physco Cow
Cow:The Ride
Cow Night Flight
Disaster Cow Transport
MOO
Cow's Revenge

I hope the groups of people who sit around and decide names like they showed on Discovery Channel are reading this. Everyone influence them with our support for a name including cow!!

Kerry - Bright Man of the Elite Eight
They name it after something that is popular then.

Cedar Point, it doesn't get any better then that:)
One thing that baffles me is medusa at sfgadv. The name is cool but I don't know why they tried to theme that in western theming.

Good luck in philly j.r.
Don't the coaster companies sometimes name the coasters as well, or is it completely up to the park to name them?

I KNOW in some cases they do hold contests for the local public to name the new coaster.

What I really wondered is... if a park can hold a contest to name a new coaster...
Would a park hold a contest for the best coaster design? The winner would then have their coaster designed and put into the park (most likely with minor modifications to make it right).

Personally I don't think most of the GP actually knows what makes a good ride... Ask most of them and many's answer would be something about "18 loop-de-loops..."
