Hershey uses green energy

Posted | Contributed by supermandl34

This summer, Hersheypark will be generating something new and exciting - clean electricity from a newly installed 10 kW wind turbine and 2 kW community energy solar power system located at the Green Team staging area in the Pioneer Frontier section of the park. The project is being sponsored by the state and alternative energy advocates.

Personally, I think this is great news! More parks should take the conservative approach towards energy.

I saw the "wind mill" when I was at the park last... wasn't sure what it was for.

I hope other parks see this as an option. What a great place to showcase it too. Does anybody know if Disney's California Adventure does this?

I'm not an electrician, but the number of killowatts doesn't strike me as a lot of energy.

Ya know... 10 kw does sound a bit on the low side.

Actually, this was the second alternative. The first one was passed on because the prarie dogs at ZooAmerica kept jumping off of the "hampster" wheels that were hooked up to the generators.

The prarie dogs had monkey pox.

Well, to run the park, you'd probably need an area at least half the size of the park dedicated to the solar cells and windmills.

From what it sounds like, it is only a showcase. I think if a houshold had either one of these, they'd be able to sell their extra power to the Jonses.

12 KW total is 100 amps at 120 volts. That's less than the service connection to most new individual homes. 150-200 amps is normal. That is more than the average use for a home though. Of course in operating an amusement park it is a drop in the bucket. About enough power to operate one or two lift motors.

As A Employee for Hersheypark we arent just running off the solar energy and the wind mill we also have a power plant behind the arena.
