Here's how false rumors get started

I have to back up the fact that it is always the enthusiasts who talk complete crap at parks.  The older ones are fine, they discuss the physics and design and it's a pleasure to talk to them in the queue line.  The young enthusiasts just seem to talk about new rides, often shouting out blatantly wrong facts in the hope of attracting attention from the GP.

So, you're saying that because I'm 20 years old, you're labeling me a snot-nosed, blabber-mouth brat that likes to spout off stats just to get my rocks off?
I dont think it's right of you to pre-judge us "younger" enthusiasts like that. Granted, a LOT of them ARE like that, but you gotta take them with a grain of salt, and be a positive influence on them. I've seen plenty of older "Enthusiasts" doing the same amounts of things you're speaking of. I tend to wonder sometimes, why I sometimes don't get the respect I deserve, and I'm thinking it's because people view me as one of the  "teeny-bopper" enthusiasts (I actually had someone tell me that once when we met up " oh wow, I thought you were one of those Teeny-Bopper enthusiasts, but you're a lot more mature than I thought" )
Granted, yes, I have a good time at parks, make fun of stuff and have a great time. I also LOVE to discuss physics, engineering, and new rides. I don't go around spouting stats to look cool, but I do wear my ACE shirts and whatnot, so if people have questions, they can ask me. With brightly colored hair, I get asked a LOT of questions.
Seems the conversations always go like this "hey, I like your hair, what did you use" ME: tell them what I use and say "I meet a lot of people at parks and it makes me very easy to spot." then they usually ask how often I go and we start talking coasters.
Not everyone that's a young-in is bad.

I think he ment a bit younger then 20
I'm 18...You have no right to tell me that I can't judge the young people of today - even if it's stereotypical.

And yes, I did mean between the ages of 12 and 15 - although it's steroetypical and I'll get blasted for it; they tend to like coasters because of the phycial thrill, the adrenaline rush whereas people 18+ begin to see the engineering side and the art of it all.

There is Nothing Wrong with Liking rollercoasters for the thrill - it's just a lot more young people like it for that reason than older.

Indeed - it is the best way to being an enthusiast - start young for the thrill and later on begin to appreciate the other sides to it.

AAHH rumors of what happened in the parks. When I worked at SFGAm and still after I always heard about someone dieing on the EDGE. Never happened, I saw the car. In fact some people always talk about people getting killed all over the place there when nobody has ever died at the park, except I think two employees in a backstage accident with truck.
Now rumors about what is going to be built at a park always tend to bog down into what each person thinks should be built. I like to just wait and find out from the mouths of those who make that choice. Much easier. Speculation is fun to a point.

Any resemblance to living or
dead people is purely coincidental.

The stand-up that's now the Batman in Texas ride, didn't it have an accident? I want to call it Shockwave, too, but that seems wrong. It seems like I remember reading about it breaking at the loop or something.
As far as people being thrown out. I can remember a girl at Myrtle Beach when I was young, the guy falling out at PKD and the kid about a month after it(he had heard about it, and tried the same feet the other, older guy had died attempting), the Bell's accident, the Americana accident, PP, and the first S:ROS accident at DL(he lived). It's safe to say it's happened several times, but people get off into talking about things. Even when they're wrong, they are going to be right. Most the accidents happened due to some set of circumstances. Some people will never see it that way.
I can remember the stories. The stories of people being stuck for hours after being shot too hard and missing the brakes on the Freefalls, cars falling not-so-straight. Did you know that White Lightnin' was removed from PC because it kept rolling off the end of the track?

BTW, why you guys argue about age for? Age means alot, that's why I'm so annoyed by the 90% of you that do not give your age on your profile?! What gives? Just put your b/date or month/year, something! Every time I read someone's post, think how old that person might be, look at the profile, and it says just a date, no year! There's lots of differences between people at different ages, it's a nice starting point:).......

every time i talk to a local in denver, they always say that somebody got thown out of the cyclone coaster at lakeside. they say the park is a dump and is not safe. i have been there and it is not a dump by any means. and as far as i know, there has never been a fatality on the lakeside cyclone
that reminds me of the time my coworker was at six flags magic mountain.... he said he saw a coaster explode in mid ride killing everyone on it. No really its true... it happened to my co worker... really!

=)

Its not just amusement parks that attracts this kind of behavior.  Some people will talk about any subject like they are expects, even if they know next to nothing about it.  Most people get their information from 60 second news clips or dumbed-down newspaper articles.  One of my best friends is like this.  He will recite information he heard 3rd hand like they where indisputable facts.  I’m no coaster expert, but when I hear someone make an obviously wrong statement, I just smile and let it slide.

Wait I just want to take a poll, who has heard the "Freefall flew off of the end" rumor at a park?

Aughhh look out there are Mice all around
Dan the Coaster Fan, I wouldn't say that there a lot of teens that spread untrue rumors/facts, but there are a few. Many of the people on these boards are teens, and I'm sure they don't appreciate the stereotype you're giving them.

-------------
Mayday - Memorial Day Weekend - Nonpoint, Nickelback, Oleander, Staind
Ozzfest - June 8 - Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Black Sabbath
Awake Tour- June 15 - Darwin's Waiting Room, Puddle of Mudd, Deftones, Godsmack

It seems like most of the people on coaster boards that spread obviously wrong rumors and claim that "i know, jst wait and see im write really!!1" really are teens (often younger teens.) Yes, I am a teen, but I don't see why I should be offended when people point out that most of the people doing the stupid stuff are from my generation (isn't that to be expected?)

A bad day at Cedar Point is better than a good day at work.
I'm a teen too, but I hate his stereotype...it's like saying more teens get in trouble at parks than adults...it's just not the case.

I could have sworn that there was a pretty severe incident on King Cobra when it first opened.  I am probably wrong because I was extremely small when that first opened.

There was a wheel failure the first year that resulted in several people being hospitalized including a couple in intensive care.  No one died.  I remember the incident well since I was in Cincinnati on business and was at PKI the next day.

I have had people tell ask me how riding Ghostrider backwards during Halloween Haunt was.
:)
(Imagine that!)

Working at Knotts, I have had a person ask me if anyone had died on VertiGo. (It had only been open a few weeks at that point.)

I think a lot of people are just confused.
THe person confused Colossus with Ghostrider.
The other confused Perilous Plunge with VertiGo.

I heard that most rumors get started at CCI (who will be building 10 new coasters in San Diego this year) ;)

"I'll bet that thing hits 5 Gs going through that loop.....faaar ooouut!"
it's not teens it's more the drunks who mess around with the restraints and get in trouble.
SEXYNINA:  So true!

Booze at a park? Now I'm as much of a partyer as anyone (maybe more so) but that's just the wrong thing at the wrong place at the wrong time!

Between the BARFING and the hazards ....that's one BAD combo-platter!

If ANYPLACE needs to stay drug free....it's Amusement Parks!

...on the rumor side...

If you BARF on an ENTERPRISE / ORBIT / WITCH'S WHEEL thing.....where will it fall?

~Tocci

i am 19 and i don't care what other teens do.  yes, it IS usually teens who do that stuff and they piss me off cause they earn the reputation that they have.  i get over it because i just tell people that they're thinking of other people my age, not me.
quailroberts: You sound smarter than most.

You keep tellin' them just that!
