Hey all, I was trying to complie a list of all the coasters I've ever been on, and the name of this one just escapes me.
It was at SFGA in the late 80's, I want to say after the Haunted Castle fire, but I am not sure. Anyhow, it was weird, I seem to remember a 90 degree lift (straight up) and at the top it almost operated like a free fall ride, the coaster "track" was inside a tube, and spiraled around the tube, so the round car in the middle, rotated about it's axis within the tube. When you got to the end, you went backwards.... For the life of me, I cant remember what it was called, or if I am hallucinating. LOL.
I thought you were talking about a Chance Toboggan for a moment, then you lost me!
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Was it Ultra Twister?
Edit - I should reword that to say "It Was" rather than ask "Was it?" :)
Ultra Twister has always had a "bad reputation" (Joan Jett running through my head now) in the coaster community. But I enjoyed it, back when I was just beginning my initiation into said community. I once waited longer for that coaster than I ever have for a coaster at GAdv before or since. Somebody mentioned a Chance Toboggan. The lift was the only similarity. I've heard that it's sitting unassembled at SF America, but I don't believe it ever opened there. I believe it resided in Texas after its tenure in Jersey. I may be wrong on those last counts, but I thought it an enjoyable ride, and I'd take another spin in a heartbeat.

But if this was DOUBLE Jeopardy, you'd be penalized for NOT phrasing in the form of a question. So stick with "Was it" :)

BTW thanks for that info LG...
Chance Tobaggan was probably mentioned because of my inability to explain the ride clearly due to my fuzzy recollection.

Yep. It spent a lot of it's life at a little-know theme park called Six Flags Astroworld, in Houston.
...And Billb, there is a very popular website called the Roller Coaster Database. It can help you answer these kinds of questions. Also, CoasterBuzz has an extensive list of parks and coasters, which can be found above, in the section just under the CB search bar.

I am familiar with the RCDB and have been using it to compile my list. I spent awhile on it before I asked here.
I dont see a way to search by park, which would be helpful because we went to Canada Wonderland back in 84 or 85 and I can't remember any of the coaster names.
I don't know how you are doing it right now, but there is an awesome feature here on CB that allows you to compile your coaster list, and even rate them if you want. Click around and start compiling.

LOL, I had just assumed that was one of those benefits of paid membership, I never bothered looking for it I think I have to add some but will take a closer look later.
LostKause is billb's unofficial guide to the CoasterBuzz experience. :)

If I'm not mistaken this coaster was in a Pepsi commercial during the 90's.
Maybe Pepsi will be kind enough to provide a grant to rebuild it...somewhere.

I had a really good ride on Ultra Twister when it was in its last weekend at Astroworld. Sadly it was the only one, but the air on that first drop was awesome. Everything after that was kind of...meh. And the capacity was terrible.

Don't worry, Mr Boardwalk's Angelfire page loads fast and doesn't have a bunch of junk on it, just some pictures.
I also noticed a duplicate in there. Dracula's Scream Machine and the Jack Rabbit on Nickels Midway Pier are one in the same. They renamed it Dracula's Scream Machine, to tie into Castle Dracula.
It was once again renamed Dracula's ScreEm Machine, for reason's unknown, but I heard Six Flags leaned on them to change the name.
