HELP!

How do I get the train to actually leave the station? I have read the technical guide and it says nothing

If you don't go into the Manual dispatch mode, the train will move by itself. Hit "h' on your keyboard to go into the help menu.

Sounds like a video card problem.

great...
Maybe you don't have any drive wheels in the station to propel it out.

The station needs to be a downward slope
I got the train to leave, but it is the SLOWEST game I have ever played.

John, what kind of a video card do you have? How many frames are you running?

That certainly sounds like a weak/outdated video card problem. The last thing I'd call the game is "Slow". It's actually quite stunning if you get it running at 50fps or more. It more than useable from 25 to 50 fpd. Under 25fps and I'd have a problem with it.
