The Kings Island ride (which is still there) is motorized, but riders operate pedals connected to shaft encoders that read the pedal speed and translate that into instructions for the drive motors. That way you still get the anti collision system, and if the rider stops pedaling the vehicle will eventually proceed at a reduced speed.
At Morey's, the pirate ships are suspended an motorized, but the other monorail ride is pedal driven, and it felt more directly responsive, for instance when it coasted there was back force on the pedals.
