Excalibur Crew for 2002!
Dang... 2Hostyl beat me too it...
Synonyms for the constelation Great Bear = Ursa Major and Big Dipper.
Another coincidence: Two Hershey coasters sharing names with two Hershey sports teams... Great Bear and the Bears (hockey) and Wildcat and the Wildcats (now defunct soccer). Okay... Yeah, yeah.... I know the Bear was named for the constelation and the Wildcat was named after the park's first coaster (Wildcat, 1923-1945)... just thought I would mention this.
Great Bear = constellation Ursa Major (as shown in the Great Bear logo, in fact!)
Constellation Ursa Major = Big Dipper
Big Dipper = long-time classic coaster name
With all that in mind, why is there anything at all wrong with the name, "Great Bear"?

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions
Geez, I thought I was alone when I thought that Great Bear was an all around run ride. Nice G's on the helix and a little airtime here and there. I wouldn't change a thing about the ride.

I was always a front seat rider on B&M's, so this past Saturday, I waited for the front seat for my first ride of the season on the GB, but then opted for a walk on in the back seat for #2. Not sure if it was the seat change or wet and slick tracks (it was a rainy day), but the Bear seemed to be running really fast. It really seemed to move around the helix and then screamed by the sooperdooperlooper, along Spring Creek, and into its final inversion... so rides #3-5 were also done in the back (all no more than a 2 train wait). Only problem, with the wet tracks, the train was dripping grease and splattering riders (wich the ride crew was giving fair warning of).
to B&R-The Chiller (and the comment "go Phantoms"): I guess they wished they were wishing it was "time to go" last time they visited Hersheypark Arena... 3-1 Bears win to close out the last regular season in the old Arena. But... as a coaster related item... in the program that night they had quotes from former players on their memories of the Arena. I think it was John Stevens (now Phantoms coach) who commented about how unique it was to come to "work" in the arena sitting "in the middle of an amusement park". Oh... and by the way... Syracuse now has a 1-0 lead over the Phantoms in their series... just in case you didn't know. :)
